STILLWATER – Former Oklahoma State equestrian rider Erin Prutow was named the winner of the NCEA's Distinguished Alumni Award in the Business field, the association announced Thursday.
Distinguished Alumni, presented by LiveEQ, are recognized in nine categories including Business, Community Engagement, Education, Equine Industry (Trainer/Coach), Equine Industry (Medical/Pharmaceutical), Equine Industry (Professional Rider), Health Sciences, Media & Communication and Young Alumni. Distinguished Alumni are separated from their institution for at least six years prior to nomination and are recognized as distinguished in the following areas: academic success, athletic success, outstanding service contributions, and post-graduate success.
Prutow is now an attorney acting as a solo practitioner with her own equine law and estate planning practice. She focuses primarily on business law, estate planning and equine law.
"I'm truly honored to be recognized by the NCEA as a Distinguished Alumna," Prutow said. "My time as a Cowgirl was invaluable and continues to shape my life as I strive to lead with kindness in everything I do."
She competed with OSU from 2007-2011, where she helped the Cowgirls secure the first of nine Big 12 titles and a top-five placement at the NCEA National Tournament. Under head coach Larry Sanchez, Prutow picked up 19 career wins to go with two MOPs.
"Erin was just an incredible member of our team," Sanchez said. "She was always energetic, driven, a tremendously hard worker and a pure joy to be around."
A team captain for the 2010-11 season, Prutow set an example in and out of competition. She had the second-best record on the team in Fences and was named one of OSU's 12 Outstanding Seniors in 2011. She achieved a 4.0 grade point average and reached the President's Honor Roll every semester as a student at OSU. Prutow also served as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for three years, where she displayed leadership abilities by fronting several charitable incentives.
After graduating summa cum laude from OSU, Prutow continued her academic journey at the Emory University School of Law in Atlanta, Ga. She earned her juris doctorate at Emory before relocating to Southern California.
Following her move to the West Coast, Prutow remained tirelessly involved in the equine world. She passed the California bar exam and began her practice of law in Los Angeles in 2016. In 2019, she was admitted to practice before the United States Tax Court, where she served as second chair in a trial representing a standardbred breeding farm regarding the hobby-loss rule.
Her close involvement in that trial motivated her to start her own equine law and estate planning practice. In her time as a practitioner, Prutow has represented members of the US Olympic Equestrian Team, USEF Hall of Fame Trainers and one of the largest equestrian publications in the country.
"I am not surprised with the success she has had with her practice and couldn't be prouder of her," Sanchez said. "I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach her in her time here in Stillwater."
Prutow is the third Cowgirl graduate to earn Distinguished Alumni status and the most recent since Caroline Daniels-Willis in 2019. OSU's first honoree was Kristen Dickerson in the NCEA's inaugural 2016 class. Current OSU Jumping Seat assistant coach Carter Anderson was named the NCEA's winner of the 2023 Young Alumni distinction.
