Hinson-Tolchard Takes Hot Streak To Arnold Palmer Cup
June 06, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State women's golfer Maddison Hinson-Tolchard is set to compete at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup this weekend, where she will play for the International Team at Laurel Valley Golf Club, located outside Ligonier, Pa.
The Arnold Palmer Cup is hosting 48 of the game's best women's and men's collegiate players from around the world. Both the USA and International teams consist of 24 golfers, each team including a dozen men and women.
Beginning in 1996, the Arnold Palmer Cup was co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament, situating the United States against a team of International players in match play. Unique to this event, the men's and women's golfers will play alongside one another as pairs in certain formats throughout the weekend.
Since the event's inception, over 125 Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on the PGA, DP World or LPGA tours, with more than 75 players claiming over 310 victories, including 2022 major champion Jennifer Kupcho. Additionally, 34 tournament alumni have represented either Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup or Solheim Cup.
Hailing from Perth, Australia, Hinson-Tolchard secured her spot on the International Team through her top-6 placement in the final Palmer Cup rankings, which were announced in late April. She is the third Cowgirl to ever play in the event, joining Isabella Fierro and Maja Stark, who were teammates on the International Team in 2021.
Hinson-Tolchard, just recently named the back-to-back Big 12 Player of the Year and a WGCA First Team All-American, has been playing some of the best golf of her career over the past couple of months.
In April, Hinson-Tolchard was the individual champion at the Big 12 Championship, edging the field out by a single stroke. At the NCAA Championship, she posted the program's best national finish in 13 years with a fourth-place outing. Her opening round 66 at the tournament is the best round ever shot by a Cowgirl at nationals.
Just ten days ago, Hinson-Tolchard was the individual medalist at the Carrollton, Texas qualifying site to claim her spot at the 78th U.S. Women's Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links in July.
In her junior campaign for Oklahoma State, Hinson-Tolchard finished top-10 seven times in just 11 tournaments played and ended the season with the program's third-best stroke average in program history at 71.12. She compiled 22 par-or-better rounds throughout the season, bringing her program-leading career total to 54.
The Arnold Palmer Cup will begin Thursday morning with four-ball matches in mixed pairings. On Friday, the teams will play two more rounds of foursome matches, with the afternoon session being played in mixed pairings once again, before concluding on Saturday with a round of singles matches. The team with most matches won by the end of the weekend will be crowned champion.
