May 20, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Twentieth-seeded Oklahoma State women's golf landed in a tie for fifth after shooting a 3-over 291 in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Course on Saturday.
With the result, the Cowgirls moved their weekend total to 5-under, equal with sixth-seeded Texas A&M. At 8-under, Texas owns a 3-stroke edge over the two schools in fourth, while USC trails the Cowgirls and Aggies by a single shot in seventh. At No. 20, OSU is the highest seeded team in the top eight entering Sunday.
Oklahoma State carded 14 birdies on the day, bringing its total to 28 on the weekend and tied for most in the field with Stanford.
A day after shooting the best NCAA Championship round in program history, Maddison Hinson-Tolchard fired a 2-under 70 to lower her score to 8-under after 36 holes of play. The Big 12 champion trails the tournament leader, Wake Forest's Lauren Walsh, by two strokes.
In typical fashion, Hinson-Tolchard surrendered just one bogey on the day, while sinking a trio of birdies. She has now drained double digit birdies this weekend with 10 and is 3-under on par-5 holes.
Through 10 career NCAA Championship rounds, Hinson-Tolchard has shot par-or-better six times. Over the next 36 holes, Hinson-Tolchard will be looking to become the program's second-ever National Champion, with Caroline Hedwall accomplishing the feat in 2010.
Following her 68 on Friday, Rina Tatematsu continued her strong weekend with an even-par round to finish the day tied for ninth. With five birdies on Saturday, Tatematsu bumped her weekend total up 11, most on the team.
The junior has now fired four par-or-better rounds in a row and gone 73-or-below in six of her nine career rounds played at Grayhawk Golf Club. Tatematsu, no stranger to the national stage, finished tied for 12th at NCAAs in 2021.
Clemence Martin signed off on a 2-over 74, moving her into a tie for 62nd. The sophomore birdied her opening hole and was a steady force throughout the day with 14 pars.
Equal for the second consecutive day, Thitaporn Saithip and Han-Hsuan Yu both recorded 3-over rounds on Saturday. The pair finished the day tied for 91st at 5-over.
On Sunday, the Cowgirls will be aiming to secure their spot in the 54-hole cut when the field is cut in half to 15 teams. Following Monday's fourth round of stroke play, the top eight teams will advance to match play on Tuesday.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to tee off for the third round tomorrow at 8:32 a.m. CT alongside Texas and Texas A&M.
