Kelby Jones Named To Cowgirl Coaching Staff
April 06, 2023 | Cowgirl Basketball
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's women's basketball team has added a rising star in the coaching profession to its staff with the announcement of Kelby Jones as an assistant coach today by Cowgirl head coach Jacie Hoyt.
"I could not be more excited to add Kelby to our staff. He is incredibly dynamic and I know his impact will be felt immediately as a recruiter. He has a unique ability to connect with people and he's a relentless worker," Hoyt said.
"It is important for me that our players know their coaches care for them both on and off the court, and I love his passion to do so. He is a perfect fit in every area."
Jones spent last season as a member of the staff at Mississippi State as the program's director of scouting and analytics, helping the Bulldogs to a 22-11 mark and a pair of NCAA tournament victories. The NCAA berth was MSU's first since 2019.
Prior to his arrival in Starkville, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of North Texas. During his time in Denton, he served as the program's recruiting coordinator.
Jones helped guide UNT to a 17-win campaign and a WNIT appearance in 2021-22. Additionally, he helped coach a pair of players to All-Conference USA honors.
Prior to the return to his alma mater, Jones worked for the University of Texas in various capacities. He started as a graduate assistant in 2016 with the Longhorns and was promoted to the team's video coordinator in 2018 after receiving his master's degree in physical education in 2018.
In August of 2019, he took on the role of director of analytics for the program.
Jones earned his degree in kinesiology from North Texas in 2016 and spent four years as the director of managerial operations during his time as a student at UNT. He worked as the team's head manager and was promoted to the program's interim director of basketball operations during his senior year. In 2015, he was nominated for the "Hardest Working Employee" award at the University of North Texas.
Jones' hiring is pending a standard background check.
