Several Impressive Performances Highlight OSU Track & Field’s Opening Day of Four-Meet Weekend
April 15, 2023 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State track & field wrapped up day one of a four-meet weekend Friday as the Cowboys and Cowgirls dropped several impressive marks from coast-to-coast.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., Taylor Roe rolled to victory in her heat in the 5,000 Meters, collecting an easy regional qualifying time with her finish of 15:47.70 Friday night. Roe sat near the front of the field in the second heat for much of the race before exploding to victory over the final mile. Cayden Dawson also competed in the 5K, completing a personal-best time of 16:28.38 to round out the night.
Earlier in the day, Gabija Galvydyte entered the 2023 outdoor campaign with a blistering 2:03.21 finish in the 800 Meters against a championship-level field. The middle-distance specialist continues to rank among the NCAA's best in the event, gathering a top 15 performance. Maddie Salek competed in the event for the first time this outdoor season, tabbing an impressive performance with a 2:06.54 finish.
On the men's side, Juan Diego Castro returned to the outdoor track in the 800 Meters as he finished in 1:48.33. Castro has the second-fastest time in OSU history in the 800 Meters and is coming off an indoor national title as the 800-meter leg of OSU's victorious Distance Medley Relay squad.
Ryan Schoppe also opened his outdoor campaign with his first race since becoming a national champion on that same DMR in the 5,000 Meters. Schoppe dropped a new personal best with his time of 13:37.06, which moves him up to seventh on OSU's all-time list. He will return tomorrow in the 1,500 Meters, looking to defend his school record of 3:37.43, which he set at last year's Bryan Clay Invite.
At the Sooner Invitational, jumper India Morgan registered a personal-best performance in the Long Jump, tabbing a distant 6.17-meter leap. Morgan's performance is the third-farthest all-conditions jump in OSU history, behind only teammate Bailey Golden, who owns the wind legal and all-conditions school records in the event.
On the men's side, Blair Anderson continued his impressive season with a 7.51-meter leap in the same event and landing on the podium.
Multi-event athletes Jayden Fiebiger, Crayton Shaw and Will Quintana started their respective Heptathlon and Decathlon events. Quintana, competing unattached, ended the first day of competition in first place with 3,595 points and three top marks overall.
At the Beach Invite in Walnut, Calif., OSU's top throwers took on the Hammer Throw Friday with Sam Mason tabbing an outdoor career-best in the event, with a 59.92-meter toss. Mason now broadens OSU's leaderboard while slimming the margin between himself and Olympian Nick Miller's school record. Freshman Rachel Neaves resumed her consistent freshman season with a 58.45-meter toss in the same event. Neaves' has reached 58 meters or better in consecutive meets.
At the Tom Jones Invitational at the University of Florida, Kalaya Ali and Michaela Travers collected personal outdoor bests in their respective events. Ali enters OSU's leaderboard in the 200 Meters, after clocking a 24.30 second finish. Ali has now set outdoor personal bests in the 200 Meters in consecutive meets. For Travers, she also set a career mark for the second time this season, wrapping up the 400 Meters Hurdles event in 59.05 seconds.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will be back in action at all four meets again on Saturday, with national champion Fouad Messaoudi opening his outdoor campaign in the 1,500 Meters.
