Roe and Galvydyte Lead Cowgirls to Successful Finish at Razorback Invitational
January 28, 2023 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State indoor track & field was back in action Saturday for day two of the Razorback Invitational.
Fouad Messaoudi made history in the men's mile, as he broke German Fernandez' 14-year-old school record with his time of 3:54.98. Messaoudi's time puts him top 10 in the nation in multiple events (3,000 Meters) after Saturday's race. Messaoudi shattered his previous best time he set at last year's Big 12 Championships by nearly four seconds.
Messaoudi was the first of four Cowboys to finish the mile in under four minutes. Ryan Schoppe, Juan Diego Castro and Alex Maier were the other OSU representatives under four minutes. Schoppe now ranks third in school history with his time of 3:55.63 to go with his second-place finish overall. Alex Stitt and Will Muirhead also recorded personal bests in their mile performances, going 4:01.42 and 4:01.52, respectively.
Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said the approach for this meet was to prepare for the 3K event in Seattle in a couple of weeks.
"From what I saw today, two guys going one and three on an all-time list (in the Mile), just as rust busters…" Smith said. "I'm really excited about where they are and what this means for the future once we get rolling."
Messaoudi joins Bailey Golden as the second athlete to break a school record this weekend after Golden topped the Pentathlon program list with a score of 3,880 Points.
For the Cowgirls, Taylor Roe and Billah Jepkirui partnered up and finished fifth and seventh overall in the women's Mile, respectively. Jepkirui crossed the finish line in 4:35.82, good enough for the sixth-fastest in program history. Both women find themselves in the top 10 in the nation unofficially on the season.
"To come out and run two 4:34 miles 15 hours apart, I think is a really good sign for where Taylor (Roe) is and what we're trying to do in two weeks," Smith said.
In the throws arena, Hannah Bradford broke the 20 meter-mark in the Weight Throw for the first time, officially moving her past World Champion Chase Ealey for second place in the school record books. Johnna Orange continued to show improvement, breaking her personal record for the third time in as many meets. Her toss of 17.49 meters tied Jocelen Ruth for the seventh farthest throw in school history.
On the men's side, Sam Mason bested his PR with a 19.36 meter toss in the Weight Throw, which moves him closer to Olympian Nick Miller's record.
In the 4x400 Meter Relays, two teams cracked their respective top 10s. For the men, DJ McArthur, EJ Berry, Cash Merutka and Charlie Bartholomew crossed the finish line in 3:09.28, which lands them in sixth place. Tamara Woodley, Gabija Galvydyte, Ansley Scott and Tori Ortiz finished in 3:39.46, the fifth-fastest time in program history.
Galvydyte had another impressive day in the individual 800 Meter race, finishing fourth. Smith said Galvydyte is "All-around, one of the most versatile athletes on the team."
"I like where Gabija is right now," Smith said. "She's going to run really fast in the next two-to-three weeks."
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will have one weekend off before splitting up to Seattle and Fayetteville, AR, for another multi-meet weekend.
