Pokes Pod: Avery Anderson III
January 19, 2023 | Cowboy Basketball
Avery Anderson is a product of the Texas Basketball Circuit. But he'll be the first to tell you New Orleans is home.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced his family to evacuate. They eventually settled in Texas. That is where Anderson's basketball career took off. He led his high school team to a state title appearance. He was named his district's MVP as a junior and senior. He owns the Northwest High School scoring record with 2,767 career points. He set at least five other records. Don't expect them to be broken anytime soon.
Avery Anderson has come a long way from the quiet freshman who first walked in the door. He's now a senior leader, hoping to finish his career in Stillwater strong.
In the excerpt below, Avery Anderson tells the story of living through Hurricane Katrina as a child and his family moving to Texas.
Avery Anderson: I remember... I think I came inside, and I saw my mom watching the news. I think I was with my dad too. She was like, "It's getting bad, we're gonna have to leave. We gotta get some clothes and load up the car." So, I remember just grabbing as many clothes as I can. We loaded up the car and we were gone.
