Eight OSU Outdoor Track & Field Athletes Prepare for NCAA Championships
June 08, 2022 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
EUGENE, Oregon – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field travels eight athletes to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships from June 8-11.
Three Cowboys kick off action on Wednesday with Ryan Schoppe and Ryan Smeeton running in the 1,500 Meter and 3,000 Meter Steeplechase Semifinals before Alex Maier takes the track for the 10,000 Meter final, the first amongst the running events.
Smeeton returns to Eugene for the first time since placing third in the NCAA last year in the Steeplechase, nearly winning the race before hitting the final barrier and recovering for a podium position.
For Schoppe and Maier, this is their first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after both competed at indoor nationals earlier this season. Schoppe enters with the eighth-fastest time in the country in the 1,500 after he set the school record with a time of 3:37.43. Maier enters the NCAA Championships hot off a Big 12 Championship and fifth-place finish at the West Prelims in the 10K.
Gabija Galvydyte gets things started for the Cowgirls on Thursday in the 800 Meter semifinal. Galvydyte finished as the Big 12 runner up in the event and set a blistering time of 2:02.90 at West Prelims, which marked the first time she ran under 2:03 in the 800.
Competing later Thursday night for the Cowgirls is Gabby Hentemann in the 10,000 Meters, who qualified with the seventh-best time at West Prelims with the sixth-fastest 10K time in program history with a time of 33:46.67. Hentemann has also had an impressive postseason thus far, leading the Big 12 Championships from wire-to-wire before coasting to a qualifying position in Arkansas.
The Heptathlon opens on Friday with four of the seven events competing the first day. Bailey Golden and Olivija Vaitaityte enter the NCAA Championships ranked tenth and eleventh, respectively, in the event and each are looking to make a mark in their first career NCAAs appearance. Both Golden and Vaitaityte have each broken the Heptathlon school record at some point this season, with the former doing so most recently at the Big 12 Championships in May.
Rounding out the field for the Cowgirls is Taylor Roe in the 5,000 Meters. Roe enters Eugene after a couple of dominating postseason performances with a Big 12 Championship in the 1,500 Meters, then winning her heat at the West Prelims by nine seconds in the 5K. The Washington native is searching for her second career national championship after winning the indoor 3,000 Meter title earlier this year in Birmingham, Ala.
With a win, Roe would become just the second Cowgirl in program history with two national championships after Jackie Goodman (5,000 & 10,000 Meters), who won both of her titles during the 1989 season.
The entirety of the NCAA Outdoor Championships will be broadcast across ESPN's family of networks with live results being updated throughout the weekend at the link below.
