Record Rewind: Rudolph Torches Pittsburgh in 2016
June 22, 2022 | Cowboy Football
In two games against Pittsburgh, the future home city of his NFL career, Mason Rudolph lit up the Panther defense for 1,037 yards and seven touchdowns through the air.
Â
In 2016, coming off of the infamous loss to Central Michigan, Rudolph tossed a 91-yard strike to James Washington that went for a touchdown on the Cowboys' first offensive play of the game. The duo would connect again in the second quarter for a 29-yard touchdown to put Oklahoma State up 17-10.
Â
Rudolph had already compiled 372 yards passing with Washington on the other end of 231 of them, both OSU school records for one half at the time. The Cowboys' 467 yards of total offense in the opening half also set a school record.
Â
With the game tied at 38 with 12:55 left in the fourth quarter, play was suspended for nearly two hours due to lightning in the area. The difference in the game would be a late 88-yard scoring drive for OSU. Following a one-yard rush by Justice Hill, Rudolph completed a pass to Jhajuan Seales for a gain of 86 yards to the Pittsburgh one-yard line. Rennie Childs would punch it into the end zone for his fourth rushing touchdown of the game that gave the Pokes the lead with 1:38 left. The win would be clinched by a Ramon Richards interception on the ensuing drive.
Â
Rudolph would finish the game 26-for-46 with 540 yards and two touchdowns. His 540 passing yards stands as the most yards in a single game in and one of only three to surpass 500 yards in program history.
