STILLWATER – Oklahoma State distance runners Alex Maier and Taylor Roe were named Midwest Region Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Year by the US Track Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Thursday.
Maier earned the honor after placing second overall in the men's 10,000 Meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the seventh first-team All-American in the 10,000 Meters for the Cowboys. His finish was also the highest for the Cowboys in the event since Shadrack Kipchirchir also placed second in 2014, with his time of 28:12.68 representing a new personal best and the fourth fastest in school history.
Maier also won the Big 12 Championship in the 5,000 Meters, winning by nearly four seconds overall. His outdoor conference title gives him three on the year after winning the 3,000 Meter and DMR Big 12 titles during the indoor season in February.
Taylor Roe earned honor with her third-place finish in the 5,000 Meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the eighth Cowgirl to earn first-team All-America honors in the event. She is also the second Cowgirl to win the award after Sinclaire Johnson did so after winning the NCAA Championship in the 1,500 Meters in 2019. Her finish was the highest for the Cowgirls in the event since Aurora Dybedokken placed second overall in 2016. Roe also shattered the school record in the 5,000 Meters by nearly 20 seconds earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invitational with her time of 15:21.47.
For Roe, the honor is her second consecutive Midwest Athlete of the Year award after also winning the award after her indoor season in which she won the 3,000 Meter title, becoming the fifth Cowgirl to win an indoor NCAA title. She continued her momentum into the outdoor season, winning her fourth Big 12 title of the calendar year in the 1,500 Meters to go along with her three indoor conference championships in the Mile, 3,000 Meters and DMR.
The pair will now gear up for cross country season in preparation for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which will be held in Stillwater for the second time in three years.
