Cowboys Take on U20 and U23 World Team Trials

STILLWATER – While Oklahoma State will be hosting Final X Stillwater in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday, June 3, over a dozen Cowboy wrestlers will be headed to Geneva, Ohio for the U20 and U23 World Team Trials.
True freshman Carter Young, Teague Travis and Kyle Haas, along with 2022 signee Jordan Williams will be wrestling in the U20 Freestyle division at the Trials.
At 65 kg, Young is coming off an 0-2 performance at the Senior World Team Trials two weeks ago, while Teague Travis took seventh place at the U.S. Open at the end of April to qualify him for the Trials. Up one weight class, Williams, who is the No. 15 overall recruit in the Class of 2022 according to FloWrestling, advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open eventually placing third at 70 kg. Haas put together a 12-0 record in open tournaments as a freshman and will make his first freestyle appearance of the spring at 92 kg.
In the U23 division, the Cowboys will send 10 members of the current team to Ohio spread out over eight weight classes. Headlining the group is All-American and Big 12 champion Dustin Plott, who will be competing at 79 kg for his first freestyle action of the spring. Plott was registered to wrestle at the U.S. Open, but was a late scratch and removed from the bracket.
At the lower weights, Trevor Mastrogiovanni will wrestle at 57 kg after posting a 19-5 record as a sophomore at 125 pounds in the OSU lineup. True freshman Cooper Birdwell will represent the Cowboys at 61 kg, while Reece Witcraft and Andrew Bloemhof are registered at 65 kg.
Along with Plott at 79 kg, sophomores Daniel Manibog (70 kg) and Chance McLane (74 kg) will make their first freestyle appearance of the season at the Trials. Also wrestling is freshman Trevor Dopps who posted a 17-4 record during his redshirt season for OSU and is at 86 kg for the tournament.
Sophomore heavyweights Luke Surber and Konner Doucet are both registered in a loaded 125 kg division that consists of two 2022 All-Americans in Tony Cassioppi and Lucas Davison. Recently completing his first season at the weight class, Surber was the Big 12 runner-up at heavyweight and was an NCAA Championships qualifier. Doucet went 10-2 in open tournaments and posted a 2-2 record in the senior division at the U.S. Open.
The Trials will begin on June 3 with the Greco-Roman division, but will not start freestyle competition until Saturday, June 4. The preliminaries and consolation rounds for both freestyle divisions are set to get underway at 9:30 a.m. in session one. The second session of the day will start at 4 p.m. consisting of the U20 medal matches and best two-out-of-three finals matches. Sunday's session will wrap up the event beginning at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of the U23 division.
