Cowboys Qualify Two to NCAA Outdoor Championships on Third Day of West Prelims
May 27, 2022 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – Oklahoma State outdoor track & field punched a couple more tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on Friday night with Ryan Schoppe and Ryan Smeeton making it through.
Ryan Schoppe continued his impressive season in the 1,500 Meters, qualifying for his first NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 3:39.70, which earned him the last time qualifier in the event. The Big 12 runner-up in the 1,500 is looking to earn his second career first-team All-America honor after finishing fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the Distance Medley Relay.
"Schoppe took a big chance leading from the front in a loaded field like this," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "It was a big gamble that ended up paying off and he hung on for that last spot."
Teammate Fouad Messaoudi ran the eighth-fastest time in the event with a time of 3:40.37, but came up just short despite finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the next-fastest time in the other heats. Messaoudi missed qualifying by one position as he finishes an impressive true freshman campaign in which he earned his first Big 12 Championship earlier this month in the 1,500 Meters.
Ryan Smeeton showed why he is considered one of the premier athletes in the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase, cruising to a qualifying position with his season-best time of 8:32.76. The two-time podium finisher in the event earned the second qualifying spot after sitting just behind the leader for much of the race and coasting to a spot in Eugene.
"I thought he was a little rusty," Smith said. "We haven't done a lot of Steeplechase races with him this year and I think as the race went on, he got better and better. He's got two more rounds left to go and I think by the time we get to the final race; he's going to be ready."
The Cowgirls will wrap up action for OSU on Saturday with five individuals and the 4x400 Meter Relay squad competing for the final spots in Eugene.
The entirety of the NCAA West Preliminary Round is streamed on SEC Network + at the start of the running events each day.
