Cowgirl Tennis Wins The Blue Gray Tennis Classic
February 26, 2022 | Cowgirl Tennis
MONTGOMERY, ALA.– Behind a dominant performance from tournament MVP Mhai Sawangkaew, Oklahoma State's women's tennis team swept No. 42 Furman and took down 18th-ranked Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon to clinch the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic title.
The victories pushed OSU to 9-1 on the season.
"This is a special tournament and it is always a great test for every team here and we grew a lot as a team this weekend and it's nice to take home a title for the third straight time we have been here," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "This one is special because so many girls had not been here before and they stepped up and performed at a high level. Credit to Wake for playing at a high level and bringing out the best in us. This weekend will prepare us for the grind of the conference season which comes next."
Sawangkaew was crowned the tournament MVP after going 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles play this weekend, including a victory over 23rd-ranked doubles duo in the nation. Sawangkaew capped off a perfect weekend with a dominant performance against 84th- ranked Anna Campana of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-1, today.
Doubles play has been strong for OSU all season, and that remained the case throughout the weekend. In the championship, Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto moved to 7-0 on the year and completed an undefeated weekend with a 6-4 victory over Wake's Samantha Wooten and Cassie Martinelli.
With the doubles point up for grabs, Alana Wolfberg and Oona Orpana rose to the occasion and delivered a 6-2 victory to seal a Cowgirl point. OSU has won the doubles point in eight of its nine matches this spring.
Following Sawangkaew's court two victory, OSU led the match, 2-1. Wake Forest got on the board when Ayumi Miyamoto fell on court one to Wake's Samantha Martinelli, 6-4, 6-2.
Lisa Marie Rioux extended OSU's lead with a 6-4, 6-3, victory in straight sets over No. 44 Carolyn Campana. Wake Forest scored its second point via a Brooke Killingsworth victory over Sofia Rojas, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.
No. 82 Oona Orpana overcame a slow start and delivered a clutch third-set performance to clinch the title for OSU by taking down Anna Brylin, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
OSU will not be in action again until March 11 when it begins a conference homestand with Kansas State at 5:00 p.m.
