Cowgirl Tennis Handles Kansas State In Conference Opener

STILLWATER, OKLA.-Â Oklahoma State's seventh-ranked women's tennis team earned its first conference win of the season in dominating fashion, defeating Kansas State, 4-0, on Friday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
The Cowgirls improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play on the year. Oklahoma State improved its all-time record against the Wildcats to 46-6. Additionally, OSU ran its winning streak to nine and completed its seventh sweep of the season while outscoring opponents by a combined 39-3 count during the streak. Â
The Cowgirls jumped out to an early advantage when they took the doubles point behind outstanding performances from both of their undefeated duos. No. 22 Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto's picked up a 6-4 victory over Kansas State's Florentine Dekkers and Ioana Gheorghita. Right behind them came No. 38 Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo, who clinched the doubles point for the Cowgirls after handling Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares, 6-4.Â
After trailing two games early on, Alana Woflberg and Oona Orpana climbed their way back to tie the match at five when it was called. Â
The Cowgirls followed their doubles performance with an equally impressive showing in singles play, starting with a dominating showing from 34th-ranked Mhai Sawankgaew, who remained unbeaten in singles after her rout of Maria Linares, 6-1, 6-1. Â
Ayumi Miyamoto put on a show during her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Wildcat Dinara Alloyarova. Martina Zerulo started fast and never turned back as she picked up the match-clinching point in dominating fashion over K-State's Rosanna Maffei, 6-1, 6-1, to complete the shutout for OSU. Â
No. 40 Lisa Marie Rioux had KSU's Karine-Marion Job on the ropes as she led, 6-1, 4-1 when her match was stopped. Sofia Rojas was on the verge of closing out Ioana Gheorghita when her match was halted and No. 82 Oona Orpana trailed in set two of her contest.Â
Next up for OSU is No. 24 Kansas on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Stillwater. Â
