Cowboy Tennis Wraps Up Day Two at OSU Invitational

STILLWATER, Okla - Oklahoma State's men's tennis team wrapped up the second day of action at its fall opener on Saturday afternoon, competing at the OSU Invitational at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
The competition is utilizing a hidden-dual format, allowing mixed matchups in singles and doubles featuring OSU, Nebraska, Wichita State and Tulsa.
On Friday, the Pokes took on Nebraska in singles play, where the Cornhuskers took five out of six matches starting with Nebraska's Victor Moreno defeating Nic Pesoli, 6-2, 6-2. Luke Hammond followed shortly with a hard-fought setback against Will Gleason, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Francisco Pini was clipped by Poni Hietaranta, 6-2, 6-4. Sammr Raina fell to Rudra Dixit, 6-3, 7-5.Â
Although back-and-forth throughout the match, Maxim Verboven came up short against Sunya Maruyama, 6-4, 7-6. Leighton Allen did prevail in his match for the Cowboys. Despite dropping the first set, Allen rallied to defeat Nic Weidehorn, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.Â
Following singles play, the Pokes faced off against Wichita State in doubles action, where the teams split the contest. Leighton Allen and Francisco Pini put the Cowboys on the board, cruising to a 6-4 victory over the Shocker duo of Luke Mrsic and Orel Ovil. Sammr Rina and Nic Pesoli dropped their match against Wichita State's Alex Richards and Ray Lo, 6-3.Â
Saturday's action began with doubles play and a back-and-forth contest with Tulsa. Throughout a match with several momentum swings, Luke Hammond and Maxim Verboven were defeated by Tulsa's Stefan Hampe and Callum Gale, 8-6. The undefeated duo of Leighton Allen and Francisco Pini came out on top against Daniel Siddall and Tom Thelwall-Jones, 8-6. To finish off doubles play, TU's Connor Di Marco and Adham Gaber defeated Sammr Raina and Nic Pesoli were defeated, 8-1.Â
The Cowboys returned to the courts for singles action against the Shockers. Wichita State stuck first, Nic Pesoli fell in straight sets against Alex Richards 6-2, 6-0, before Luke Hammond came up short against Luke Mrsic 6-3, 6-1. Sammr Raina battled against Jackie Lin before ultimately falling, 6-1, 6-3. Francisco Pini battled Ray Lo, before suffering a 6-4, 6-4 loss.Â
Leighton Allen shined once again for OSU, taking a 6-3 first-set win for Orel Ovil. Although the Shocker could answer with a 6-4 win in the second set, Allen cruised to a 6-3 victory to claim the third to put the Cowboys on the board.Â
On court one, Maxim Verboven maintained Allen's momentum, claiming a 7-6 first-set victory to Stefan Latinovic. Verboven faltered to drop the second set, 6-4, but quickly regained his form to snag the third set, 6-1.Â
The Cowboys will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 19 as they take on Nebraska in doubles at 10 a.m. followed by singles play against Tulsa at 3 p.m.
