Kehl Takes Big 12 Outdoors Javelin Crown
May 15, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Oklahoma State track and field team got their stay at Kansas State for the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship off to the right start with a number of notable performances, including a championship throw from Kelsey Kehl in the women's javelin.
The Washington State-transfer junior has exploded back onto the outdoor scene after a year off due to COVID pandemic cancellations and has taken full advantage of every opportunity she's had to compete since arriving at Oklahoma State.
"It's a big moment for her," multis coach Josh Langley said. "A big moment for this event in our program. Getting last year taken away from her and the adversity she's overcome off the track and fighting the battles she has, honestly, I think it would cripple a lot of people, but not her. It's been pretty amazing to watch her mature and progress as a person and an athlete."
In her first year as a Cowgirl, Kehl broke the all-time program record in the women's javelin, then went on to best her own record two weeks later; she can now add conference champion to her Big 12 resume. She secured the conference crown with her fifth-attempt mark of 49.08m, but made the most of her last throw in conference competition: Kehl launched a 50.03m bomb for good measure in her final attempt, certifiably cementing her name in Big 12 history.
"Kind of just surreal right now, truly," Kehl said. "I don't know if it's hit me yet; even when I stood up on the podium, to me, it's just another day throwing javelin. I'm looking forward to whatever's next because I know there's more and I'm not done."
In the first of two days of multis event competition, Oklahoma State's multis-specialists placed well in the first half of their events and are set to continue their run for Big 12 medals and team points for the Pokes.
As she has been all season, Bailey Golden is the Cowgirls' front-runner through the first four events of the women's heptathlon. She got her day off to the right start in the first of seven total events: her 13.92 time in the 100 meter hurdles is a lifetime best for the first-year outdoor competitor from Choctaw, Oklahoma.
The shot put was the best collective outing for the Cowgirls in day one: Golden, Maddie Meiner and Megan Mann each posted career bests on their way to top-ten finishes. Golden lead the pack, placing fourth with a 11.98m mark, Meiner tabbed in right behind in fifth with a 11.80m throw and Mann rounded out the group in 10th with a 10.17m toss.
With three events remaining, Golden sits in sixth with 3,305 points, Meiner holds the seventh-place spot with 3,266 points and Mann is knocking at the door with a point total of 2,781.
On the men's side of things, multis veteran senior Jake Dyer is the Cowboys' leader through five events of the men's decathlon. He scored consistently well for the OSU men's unit throughout the day, posting three consecutive, top-five finishes in the long jump, shot put and high jump and finished no lower than sixth on the day. He sits in sixth place overall through day one.
Trailing Dyer closely is freshman Max Braht, who contributed to the Cowboys' point total in more ways than one on this first of three days. In eighth place with 3,522 points after five events, Braht went on to score the Pokes in the open men's javelin, grabbing an eighth-place medal with a 56.52m throw. The all-time Cowboy performer in the event fares well in tomorrow's decathlon javelin throw after his point-scoring performance today.
Rounding out OSU's multis men, William Edmonds is within striking distance of a podium finish, holding steady in 10th place with a 3,401 point total.
A trio of OSU distance athletes ended day one on a high note in the 10,000 meters. In the women's race, Molly Born finished runner-up in a time of 34:21.35. In the men's race – the final event of the day – Victor Shitsama finished in a 29:34.19, good for the eight-place finish and Adam Dayani took 12th with a 29:54.51 pace.
In the women's hammer throw, despite being kept from the final by a talented field of female throws athletes, Hannah Bradford and Johnna Orange both posted career best marks. Bradford, a sophomore, tossed for 51.55m on her third attempt and Orange, in her first year with Oklahoma State, was hot from the start and tabbed a personal record – 43.52m – in her first attempt.
The Pokes will be right back at it from the R.V. Christian Track tomorrow to compete in the second of three days of competition at the conference championship meet.
Day two from Manhattan will feature preliminary races for sprints events, a handful of throws and jumps events and the conclusion of the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. The men's 110 meter hurdles as a part of the men's decathlon is slated to open up the day at 10 a.m.
