Cowgirl Equestrian Defeats Baylor For First Win Of Season

STILLWATERÂ -Â The sixth-ranked Oklahoma State equestrian team defeated No. 7 Baylor, 14-6, Saturday for its first win of the season, highlighted by an excellent performance in both disciplines to pull away for the victory.Â
"Our girls rode smart and confident," jumping seat coach Olivia Dorey said. "That was our goal this week and we are excited to carry that into tomorrow."
"Today was excellent momentum that showcased the strength and potential of our team," western coach Laura Brainard said. "I feel like we're just getting started showing what we can do."
The meet started with Fences and Horsemanship coinciding, where the Cowgirls got off to a strong start with many outstanding performances and took each event with an identical score of 4-1. The February NCEA rider of the Month, Jojo Roberson, picked up where she left off, earning a Cowgirl point by defeating Elsie Naruszewicz, 74-73.5.Â
Reigning Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of The Year Harley Huff continued her success, picking up a victory for the second consecutive meet by defeating Clara Johnson, 71-70. Natalie Vargo picked up her first win as a Cowgirl after beating Katie Davis, 74.5-74.Â
Senior Sydnee Gemar continued OSU's success, beating Kacie Scharf, 75.5-73, and earning MOP honors. Baylor's lone Horsemanship point came after Marley Marinwaring defeated Cassidy Watters, 72.5-69.
In Fences, the only Baylor point came off a 72-64 win from Savannah Hemby over Poke Sydney North. After the dropped point, the Cowgirls would go on to rout the Bears in Fences.Â
Cowgirl Abigail Brayman earned MOP honors after defeating Gia Gulino, 85-82, and Emma Pacyna got in the win column by defeating Rachael Davis, 79-76.
For the second straight meet, Katie Schell dominated in Fences, defeating Maddie Vorhies, 83-70. Sydnie Ziegler tacked on another OSU point winning, 83-80 over Caroline Fuller, extending the Pokes' lead to 8-2 at the halfway point.Â
Next, Reining and Flat occurred simultaneously. In Reining, the Cowgirls got off to a slow start and would lose, 3-2. Hannah Lovrien was defeated by Baylor's Andie Pratt 68-67, and Isabella Jacuzzi took a 71.5-71 win over Cowgirl Stephanie Helsen to get the Bears within four.Â
Molly Mitchell countered the Baylor comeback attempt, beating Madaline Callaway, 72.5-71.5, before OSU's Natalie Vargo dropped her point to Daisy Kaufman, 73.5-71. Stephanie Gripp claimed the event's final point by beating Jenna Meimerstorf, 71.5-70.Â
OSU finished the competition by dominating in Flat, winning the event 4-1. Hope King started off the competition with a 72-56 victory over Baylor's Maddie Vorhies, and Brayman picked up her second victory of the day, 84-76, over Caroline Fuller.
Baylor picked up a point when Rachael Davis defeated Hannah Coleman, 79-69. The Cowgirls countered the only Baylor point with two-straight victories. Schell secured another Cowgirl point with an 80-78 win over Dominika Silvestri, and Katie Pelzel routed Gia Gulino of Baylor, 85-58, to earn MOP honors and pick up the final OSU point.Â
The Cowgirls are back in action Sunday at 9 a.m. in Fort Worth, Texas, when they face No. 5 Fresno State.
