Cowgirl Equestrian Defeats Fresno State In A Nailbiter

FORT WORTH-Â Oklahoma State's sixth-ranked equestrian team defeated No. 5 Fresno State, 8-7, on Sunday to close out its Big 12 weekend doubleheader undefeated.
The meet started with Fences, where the Cowgirls got off to a strong start with another Katie Schell victory, 82-78. The win moved her to 3-0 on the season in Fences and gave, OSU an early advantage.Â
"Today was the true definition of a team," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "Everyone did what they could to bring home the victory and I could not be more proud of this group."
Abigail Brayman dropped her point to Fresno State's Cecily Hayes, 83-55. Cowgirl freshman Paige Jones shined in her first career start, defeating Anna Bertozzi,, 76-74. Fresno State earned the Fences competition's final point when Lizzie Strodden narrowly defeated Cowgirl Sydnie Ziegler, 85-84, to make the final Fences tally, 2-2.Â
Next up was Reining, where the Cowgirls and Bulldogs split the contest, 2-2. Hannah Lovrien picked up a victory against Fresno State's Julianne Kelley, 71.5-70.5. Bulldog Baily Alexander beat Molly Mitchell, 70.5-68.5.
Fresno State took the lead when Lexee Padrick defeated Stephanie Gripp, 72-65.5. Cowgirl Stephanie Helsen finished off the event, winning her point, 71.5-69, to head into the break deadlocked at 4-4.
The Cowgirls took control of the meet in Equitation on the Flat with a 3-1 event score. OSU came out firing, starting with Katie Schell getting it done with her third consecutive Flat win by way of a 79-71 victory over Grace Mathias. Team captain Abigail Brayman followed with a season-high 86, defeating Sara Tuck of Fresno State, 86-78, and earning MOP honors.Â
Fresno State's only flat point came with Anna Bertozzi's 83-68 defeat of Cowgirl Hannah Coleman. Katie Pelzel countered by scoring the final Flat point, beating Cecily Hayes, 80-79, to give the Pokes a 7-5 advantage heading into Horsemanship.Â
Horsemanship was the final event in which the Cowgirls dropped two points. Harley Huff was defeated, 75-73.5, by Alexis Steele. Natalie Vargo dropped her point to Bulldog Emily Maul, 74-5-73, to tie the meet up at 7.Â
Cowgirl Jojo Roberson and Bulldog Hannah Bujis tied, each scoring a 76.5. Sydnee Gemar earned MOP honors after scoring a 77 and earning the meet-clinching point.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on March 13 in Stillwater when they face TCU.
