Birmingham, Ollison Event Wins Highlight OSU’s Day at TCU Invite
March 20, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FORT WORTH, Texas – Cowgirl sprinters Aaliyah Birmingham and Christina Ollison's event wins were the highlight of in Oklahoma State's second meet of the outdoor season, the TCU Invitational.
Birmingham's personal best time of 23.85 in the 200 meters earned her the event win, her second of the season to go along with a 100-meter title she earned at the Longhorn Invitational. Her time is tied-fourth fastest in program history and ranks 10th-fastest in the country in this young outdoor season.
Joining Birmingham as top-10 finishers in the 200 meters was Ollison (24.20) in third and Brooke Givens (24.90) in eighth. Aside from her success in the 200, Ollison, the 400-leg of the indoor All-American Cowgirl DMR, also raced well in the 400 meters, where she earned the first-place finish with a career best 53.93 time. The pace is the third-fastest in Cowgirl history and currently ranks third in the NCAA.
"Today was a good indicator of the type of season these athletes are capable of," sprints coach Giles McDonnell said. "For the most part, this is was the first oudoor track meet that many of them had since summer of 2019. It was good for them to get out and face competition in the outdoor setting. [Birmingham and Ollison] matching and setting new career bests this early is just added confidence. Overall, a solid step in the right direction."
Ollison was joined in the 400 by a pair of Cowgirls who also earned top-ten finishes. Nicolette Dixon clocked in at 55.88, earning the fourth-place finish while freshman Kalaya Ali rounded out the trio in 10th, crossing the finish line in 56.65.
With the outdoor season underway, Kelsey Kehl and Micalah Millard, OSU's javelin specialists, were able to compete for the first time in nearly two years. Kehl, a Washington State-transfer, got her Oklahoma State career off to a hot start, earning the runner-up finish with a 45.96m mark, the third-best mark by a Cowgirl in program history.
"Kelsey's waited a long time to throw in the orange and black, really to throw period," multis coach Josh Langley said. "I think she had a decent day considering how long it's been since she's been in that competition setting and felt those pre-meet jitters. She's glad to be back but today was a rust-buster and her best is yet to come."
With no heptathlon or decathlon in today's competition, Oklahoma State's multis athletes took to the field for individual events.
In the high jump, a pair of OSU's indoor All-Big 12 honorees placed in the top five. Meiner finished with a 1.69m mark, earning a fifth-place finish, while Max Braht placed fourth with a jump of 1.80m.
Braht and Meiner weren't the only OSU athletes to put up impressive jumps today. A trio of Cowgirls posted top-10 finishes in the long jump. Saara Hakanen took the third-place spot with a 6.08m jump, Ryan Roane finished in sixth with a jump of 5.84m and Maddie Meiner rounded out the group in eighth with a 5.75m mark.
Up next for OSU track and field is a trip back to the Lonestar State for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on March 25-27.
