Cowgirls Split Day Two of Mizuno Classic

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team continued the Mizuno Classic by splitting its two games against UTSA and Kansas City, which moves their record to 21-4 on the season.
Kelly Maxwell (8-1) got the start for the Cowgirls in game one and pitched her sixth complete game of the season, giving up just one hit on the day while striking out eight UTSA batters.
The Cowgirls got off to a hot start with three runs in the second inning, boosted by a Karli Petty single that scored two runs. Petty went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
In the next inning, Hayley Busby and Michaela Richbourg each hit two-run homers to extend the Cowgirls' lead to 7-0 after three innings.
OSU finished off the scoring in the bottom of the fourth as Busby hit a three-run home run to secure the 11-2 victory. Busby went 3-for-3 with five RBI in game one.
Logan Simunek got the ball in game two against Kansas City and pitched four innings while allowing one earned run in the game.
Kansas City scored three runs in the top of the second and fourth innings to take an early six-run lead.
The Cowgirls cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth as Chelsea Alexander hit a two-run double down the left field line to kick off the scoring for OSU. Alexander went 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI.
OSU mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Petty led off the inning with a solo home run. Chyenne Factor drove in the second run of the inning for the Cowgirls with a groundout. However, a strikeout ended the comeback effort and OSU fell by a final score of 5-6.
OSU finishes off the Mizuno Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader against Wichita State and Kansas City at 4 and 6:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
