Gundy Named Munger Award Semifinalist
December 16, 2021 | Cowboy Football
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy is one of 15 FBS coaches named as a semifinalist for the 2021 George Munger College Coach of the Year Award, announced Thursday by the Maxwell Football Club.
Gundy, who won the Bryant Coach of the Year Award and Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award 2011, is in his 17th year as head coach for the Cowboys and is the school's all-time leader in wins with a career record of 148-69.
In 2021, Gundy has coached the Cowboys to an 11-2 overall record and No. 9 ranking in every major poll heading into Bowl Season. OSU finished the regular season alone on top of the Big 12 standings and earned its first trip to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game, despite being picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 Football Preseason Poll.
During Gundy's time at OSU, the Cowboys have had seven seasons with at least 10 wins, an outright Big 12 title (2011) and a share of the Big 12 South title (2010). He has coached the Cowboys to five New Year's Six bowl games since 2010 and his teams have reached the top 10 of the AP poll 10 times since 2008.
Additionally, Gundy has established school-record streaks of 16 straight winning seasons and 16 straight bowl appearances, including the bowl appearance this season. He has led the Cowboys to becoming one of only three Power Five teams with a winning season and bowl appearance in each of the past 16 years.
Semifinalists for the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award were selected by the MFC National Selection Committee. Five finalists for the award will be announced the final week of December and the winner will be announced on January 13. The formal presentation of the Munger Award will take place at the 85th Maxwell Awards Gala on March 18 at Harrah's Atlantic City Resort.
Coach Gundy and the Cowboys wrap up the 2021 season on Saturday, January 1, 2022, when they face No. 5 Notre Dame at 12 p.m. CT in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.
