Cowgirl Soccer Knocks Off West Virginia In Overtime
October 28, 2021 | Cowgirl Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Olyvia Dowell's golden goal lifted Oklahoma State to its third consecutive win over West Virginia Thursday night as the Cowgirls posted a 2-1 victory over the 21st-ranked Mountaineers in the regular season finale at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
With the win, OSU enters the postseason with a 9-6-2 record that includes a 4-3-1 mark in Big 12 Conference play. The Cowgirls are the No. 4 seed at the Big 12 Soccer Championship and open tourney play against fifth-seeded Texas Tech Sunday at 2 p.m. in Round Rock, Texas.
Dowell's game winner came just 71 seconds into extra time. Samiah Phiri delivered the ball to Gabriella Coleman, who drove endline and sent a pass through the box. Dowell was waiting and took one touch before drilling a shot near post to set off an OSU celebration.
It marked the second-straight year that Dowell has recorded a golden goal against the Mountaineers.
WVU (9-5-4, 3-3-3) took the game's initial lead in the 11th minute when Isabella Sibley tallied her fifth goal of the season, and the home team took the 1-0 lead into intermission.
But the Cowgirls would get the equalizer early in the second half compliments of Hannah Webb, who delivered two shots that WVU goalie Kayza Massey saved before Webb snuck her second rebound attempt and third shot into the net to tie things at 1-1.
OSU goalkeeper Evie Vitali recorded four second-half saves to help keep the score knotted and send the game to overtime.
Prior to Thursday's match, WVU had given up multiple goals only twice all season, and the Cowgirls' two goals tied for the most the Mountaineers have allowed in a game this year.
