Cowboy Culture: Max Verboven
October 15, 2021 | Cowboy Tennis
Max Verboven has the distinction of being one of five experienced transfers brought in to bolster the Cowboy tennis roster under first-year head coach, Dustin Taylor.
Only two months into the fall season, Verboven is settling in and not just honing his tennis skills, but learning first-hand how Taylor stresses the importance of his player's well-being - on and off the court.
"DT and Dane make sure that we're okay off the court. DT will pick up our calls at any time and we even go over to his house. DT takes really good care of me, all of us really. I really like Dane too. They have been completely different from my other experiences," Verboven said.
"They will even hang out with us outside of practice. I really enjoy our team dinners at DT's house. We do a team dinner at his house every week with his family and they are pretty fun."
The native of Overpelt, Belgium, brings an impressive set of skills and resumé to the OSU team after previously competing at Arkansas. Playing primarily at the No. 1 spot, Verboven earned an impressive victory last season over No. 25 David Stevenson of Memphis. He also defeated the No. 14 and 40 doubles duos in the country.
At the age of four, Verboven was given a tennis racket and he never looked back. Winning runs in the family. Max's brother, Laurens, graduated from the University of Southern California in 2019 where he collected ITA All-American honors.
Verboven says that his time in Stillwater has been nothing less than enjoyable.
"So far, I really enjoy the new guys. School is going well and the facilities are really nice here. There isn't anything to complain about," Verboven said.
Along with starting a new chapter as a Cowboy, the junior has high hopes and aspirations for the season.
"It's good, there are new chances, new opportunities and new people. I want to be ranked in singles," Verboven said.
"I want to win the conference and the team to be as successful as we can be."
