February 01, 2021 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER โ Fresh off his game-winning shot against Arkansas, Oklahoma State star guard Cade Cunningham was named to the Wooden Award Late Season Top-20 Watch List, which was released Monday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The 20 players on the list are considered strong candidates for both the 2021 John R. Wooden National Player of the Year Award and the Wooden Award All-America Team.
Cunningham is the Big 12's leading scorer at 18.1 points per game, and is the nation's only player with his all-around averages of 6.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.9 blocks per game. He returned to the court after a two-game absence and led the Cowboys to an 81-77 win over Arkansas by scoring 11 of OSU's final 17 points, including the final six.
The Arlington, Texas native is also a finalist for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award and was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top-25. Cunningham joins Baylor's Jared Butler as the only Big 12 players on the Wooden Award Late Season Top-20.
Created in 1976, the previous winners of the Wooden Award read like a who's who of basketball royalty - Larry Bird ('79), Michael Jordan ('84), Tim Duncan ('97), Kevin Durant ('07), Candace Parker ('07; '08), Maya Moore ('09; '11) and Breanna Stewart ('15 and '16).
Players not chosen to the midseason top-25 are still eligible for the Wooden Award late season list, and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award.
Players not chosen to the late season list are still eligible for the Wooden Award National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
Cunningham and the Cowboys will return to action at TCU on Wednesday night. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
