Cowboy Wrestling Secures Big 12 Title with One Session Remaining

TULSA, Okla. – The No. 11 Oklahoma State wrestling team secured the team conference title Sunday morning with one session remaining at the 2020 Big 12 Championships.
The Cowboys went 9-0 in the session, wrapping up with four third-place finishers and another in seventh place. OSU's team total of 135.5 points is 27 points ahead of second-place Iowa State and is insurmountable in the final session on Sunday night, barring the loss of several team points.
"It was a good round," coach John Smith said. "You talk about it being a little tougher in some of these gut matches that you wrestle in these consolations as we've seen over and over again in conference and national tournaments… It takes a lot of energy to wrestle. If you think about how hard it's going to be and know that going into it will help your performance. We did a good job of that today."
OSU's third-place finishers included Dusty Hone (141), Joe Smith (174), Anthony Montalvo (184) and Dakota Geer (197), who each went 2-0 in the session. It was the first Big 12 appearance for Hone and Montalvo, the second-straight third-place finish for Geer and the third top-three finish for Joe Smith.
There were two upset wins by the Cowboys Sunday morning, including an 8-2 decision from Geer over third-seeded Jake Woodley of Oklahoma to reach the third-place match and a win via injury default from Joe Smith after he had built a lead over Iowa State's third-seeded Samuel Colbray in the third-place match.
Geer followed his win with a technical fall over seventh-seeded Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado, while Montalvo and Hone finished off their third-place match opponents with wins via decision.
Cowboy freshman Reece Witcraft was OSU's seventh-place finisher, as he went 1-0 with a technical fall on the final day of his first appearance at the conference tournament.
The 2020 Big 12 Wrestling Championships conclude with the finals in Session IV at 6 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa. OSU has four wrestlers competing, as senior Nick Piccininni (125) aims to become the ninth wrestler in Cowboy history to win four conference titles, Boo Lewallen (149) aims for his second and Wyatt Sheets (157) and Travis Wittlake (165) try to win their first.
