Cowgirl Tennis Wins First Big 12 Match Of The Year Over No. 42 Texas Tech
March 06, 2020 | Cowgirl Tennis
STILLWATER -Â The No. 12 Oklahoma State State Cowgirl tennis team opened up Big 12 play with a win over No. 42 Texas Tech at the Greenwood Tennis Center's outdoor courts on Friday evening, 4-1.
Â
The Cowgirls proved themselves as a dominant force in doubles once again, winning the point with back-to-back victories on courts one and two. No. 5 Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto moved to 10-0 on the season together with a 6-2 win over Olivia Peet and Margarita Skriabina. Sophomore Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and freshman Lenka Stara won their match on court two to clinch the point over No. 75 Nell Miller and Lisa Mays.
Â
"I thought the doubles set the tone early for us," said head coach Chris Young. "We didn't play exceptionally well, probably not our best tennis, but I thought the girls competed well and got the job done."Â
Â
The Cowgirls dropped the first singles match of the night with freshman Alana Wolfberg falling to Nell Miller, 6-4, 6-1, on court four. Oklahoma State would respond quickly with a win on court two from Bunyawi Thamchaiwat over No. 114 Margarita Skriabina, 6-2, 6-1. Thamchaiwat is now 8-0 this season in singles play, with most of her wins coming on court two.
Â
"The thing that Bunyawi [Thamchaiwat] has improved the most this year is just her consistency," said Young. "I think she's doing a really good job with consistent play and that's really important for her. I think she's been able to execute and do some things technically really well. She's opening the court up and has been really solid."
Â
Wolfberg's singles loss would be the only one of the night for OSU. No. 63 Ayumi Miyamoto won her match over Lisa Mays on court three, 6-4, 6-4, for OSU's third point of the evening. Oklahoma State would finish off the 4-1 victory thanks to Lenka Stara on court six. The freshman Cowgirl defeated Isa Di Laura in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Â
Oklahoma State is now 10-1 this season and with Friday's win, the team is now on a five-match winning streak. OSU has now defeated three consecutive ranked opponents after their wins over No. 11 Pepperdine, No. 30 South Carolina and now No. 42 Texas Tech. The Cowgirls one and only loss came at the hands of Ohio State, who is now the second-ranked team in the entire country.
Â
The Cowgirls will continue their homestand and conference matches on Sunday, March 8 when the TCU Horned Frogs make a trip to Stillwater.
