BOX SCORE
STILLWATER -Â The No. 12 Oklahoma State State Cowgirl tennis team played its second Big 12 match of the season on Sunday afternoon inside the Greenwood Tennis Center and defeated the TCU Horned Frogs, 6-1.
Â
Oklahoma State opened up the match with yet another doubles point won thanks to courts one and three. Freshman Alana Wolfberg and sophomore Catherine Gulihur played just their second match together this season, but picked up the first win of the day with a 6-1victory over Stevie Kennedy and Margaret Polk.Â
Â
It would be the No. 5 doubles team in the country that would clinch the doubles point for Oklahoma State on court one by remaining undefeated on the season. Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto defeated Addy Guevara and Marie Norris, 6-3, to put the Cowgirls up 1-0 going into singles play.Â
Â
"I think it's always important for us to play well at home and protect this court," said head coach Chris Young. "When we have good crowd support, it really gives our girls an extra boost. It really played a big factor for Lisa [Rioux] and Bunyawi [Thamchaiwat] there at the end, because they were having some tough matches, but every time this crowd was there to pick them up."
Â
OSU would win the first singles point of the day on court four behind a 6-2, 6-0 win from Alana Wolfberg over Margaret Polk. Despite the quick 2-0 lead from Oklahoma State, the Horned Frogs would answer with a win on court three, as Stevie Kennedy defeated No. 63 Ayumi Miyamoto, 6-1, 6-2.Â
Â
Catherine Gulihur played in her first singles match since January today on court six and earned the Cowgirls their third point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Chloe Hule. Oklahoma State clinched the match over TCU with a 7-6, 6-0 win from Lenka Stara on court five over Addy Guevara. Both teams opted to play out the remaining points in the match.
Â
"I was so confident," says Gulihur. "I've been ready to play singles for a while now, and although we all make mistakes as tennis players, I've just been really wanting to get back on that horse. I went in so excited, and when coach told me I was playing singles I just said 'Yes! Let's go!'"
Â
No. 49 Lisa Marie Rioux won the fifth point of the day for the Cowgirls on court one with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mercedes Aristegui. No. 29 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat was the final Cowgirl to finish on Sunday afternoon, as she defeated No. 81 Marie Norris, 7-5, 7-6, keeping her perfect record alive this season and moving to 9-0 on the year, including a 5-0 record over a ranked opponent.
Â
The win over the Horned Frogs takes Oklahoma State to an outstanding 11-1 on the season, including a 2-0 record in Big 12 play. The Cowgirls have now won six consecutive matches, with three of those four coming over ranked opponents. OSU will now hit the road for its next three matches, beginning with a Big 12 match in Manhattan, Kan. on March 13, followed by Kansas in Lawrence on March 15 and then finally at Miami in Coral Gables, Fla. on March 18.Â
