Cowgirl Golf Season Recap
March 24, 2020 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER - After a promising start that included a team tournament title and two individual victories the Oklahoma State women's golf season came to an abrupt end due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Cowgirls finished the season ranked No. 17 according the GolfStat rankings in head coach Greg Robertson's first season. The Cowgirls are the second-highest ranked team in the Big 12 behind No. 2 Texas.
When he arrived at Karsten Creek, Robertson said he wanted to use the fall as an evaluation period for the team. The Cowgirls opened the fall season by winning the Trinity Forest Invitational, which marked the first win in a coaches debut event since current OSU men's golf coach and former teammate of Robertson, Alan Bratton, did so in 2011.
The Cowgirls also picked up an individual title in the fall to go along with their team championship when freshman Isabella Fierro tied a tournament record and joined the Cowgirl record book with her performance at the Betsy Rawls Invitational. Fierro shot a 201 for the tournament, which set a Cowgirl golf 54-hole score record by four strokes. Her third round 65 (-7) is the tied for the program's second lowest to-par round ever by a Cowgirl.
The Betsy Rawls Invitational was the Cowgirl's best performance as a team for the season. Led by Fierro, the Cowgirls shot a 13-under par 501 for the event. The Cowgirls 501 54-hole score was the lowest of the season and tied for the fifth-lowest score in program history.
The Cowgirls entered the spring season ranked No. 15 and were looking more dangerous than ever with the addition of a top-10 ranked amateur in the world. Maja Stark, a freshman from Abbekas, Sweden, joined the Cowgirls over winter break and provided another world-class player to the Cowgirls starting lineup.
While Stark had to sit out of the first tournament of the spring, she did not take long to make her presence felt when she did get on the course. In just her second collegiate tournament, Stark tied for first place at the Hurricane Invitational giving Oklahoma State its second individual champion of the season.
The freshman duo of Isabella Fierro and Maja Stark became the first pair of freshman to win individual events in the same season in Cowgirl golf history. Stark and Fierro's wins marked the 27th and 28th time an individual has won an event for Greg Robertson in seven seasons as a head coach.
The Hurricane Invitational would be the last event for the Cowgirls season as the NCAA cancelled spring sports championships due to COVID-19. The Cowgirls were set to compete in three more tournaments before beginning postseason play with the Big 12 tournament.
The Cowgirls were a young team this season and laid the foundation of the program for many years to come. Michelle Forsland was the lone senior on the team and competed in four events for the Cowgirls tallying one top-10 finish, which was her second of her career at OSU.
Sophomore Lianna Bailey will return to the lineup next fall. Bailey made a big improvement between her freshman and sophomore year dropping her average score from 74.65 to 72.39. She was playing the best golf of her career early in the spring highlighted by a second place finish at the UCF Challenge where she shattered her career best scores. The sophomore from England has made a steady climb up the GolfStat individual rankings and finishes the season at No. 64.
Fellow sophomore Han-Hsuan Yu will also return to Karsten Creek next fall after ending her second season for the Cowgirls as the No. 157 golfer in the nation. Yu competed in all seven events Oklahoma State played in averaging a 73.76 round score, which improved from her freshman season by nearly a whole stroke. Yu tallied two top-10 finishes on the season, with her best finish coming as a tie for eighth place at the Trinity Forest Invitational.
Freshman Hailey Jones also earned two top-10 finishes on the season. A fourth place finish at the UCF Challenge was her best outing of the season when she helped the Cowgirls score the second-lowest team round in program history by carding a 68 individually.
Junior Emma Whitaker competed in five tournaments this season with her best finish being a tie for 25th place. Whitaker has improved every season at OSU with her latest scoring average dropping from a 77.88 to a 76.40 as a junior. Whitaker will take over as the Cowgirls lone senior on the roster for next season.
