Pokes Wrap Up Action at J.D. Martin Invitational
February 08, 2020 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
NORMAN – The Oklahoma State track and field teams wrapped up action at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Saturday evening in Norman, Oklahoma. The Pokes turned in five top-five finishes on the day to conclude the first half of their indoor season.
Torrey Hickel threw the shot a season-best mark of 16.98 meters in a third-place finish for the Cowboys. The all-conference shot putter has placed in the top five in four of five meets this season, including wins at the Bob Timmons Challenge and Arkansas Invitational. Also cracking the top five, Michael Releford finished fourth in his season debut for the Pokes.
"Torrey has been frustrated with his season," assistant coach Josh Langley said. "He's been very consistent, which is usually a sign of a breakthrough coming up. And while this was a good meet, I don't think it's the big throw that we know is coming."
Freshman Daniel Nickell Jr. finished as the runner-up in the mile in his second race of the season for OSU. Wyatt Landis cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place finish.
Other notable performances for the Cowboys included Joshua Anadu's sixth-place finish in the long jump and Justin Long finishing sixth in the 600-yard race. Kurtis Cotton ran a new personal-best time in the 60 meters and narrowly missed the final, while Jack Fling and William Edmonds both turned in top-10 finishes in the high jump.
For the Cowgirls, Elissa White cleared 3.75 meters in the pole vault. It was a season-best vault for White, who has three top-10 finishes in four meets this season.
"I'm happy for Elissa," Langley said. "Her and Coach Boxley have developed a great working relationship and they are close to putting up a big bar soon."
In the triple jump, Ryan Roane tallied her fourth top-10 finish of the season, placing seventh. On the track, Michaela Travers and Kalaya Ali both finished inside the top five in the 600-yard race. Freshman Emily Forster finished seventh in the mile and Kaylee Oyler crossed the line eighth-fastest in the 800 meters.
Next weekend, the Pokes will split up as the distance athletes will travel to Seattle, Washington, for the Husky Classic while the rest of the team will head south to Lubbock, Texas, for the Texas Tech Shootout.
