No. 2 Cowgirls Fall at No. 8 SMU

DALLAS - The second-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls fell to No. 8 SMU, 13-5, Saturday at the Dallas Equestrian Center.

"We had several great rides today but fell short in the end," said OSU head coach Larry Sanchez. "This is a very good team, and I know will bounce back this week as we prepare for TCU next Saturday."Â

The meet began with Flat and Horsemanship. The Cowgirls took Flat, 3-2. Katie Pelzel scored the first point of the day for the Cowgirls and Hannah Janson narrowly defeated Madi Johnson, 79-77, to improve her record to 5-3-1 on the season. Hannah Coleman finished off the event with a 71-67 victory over Devin Seek to give the Cowgirls' a 3-2 victory in the Flat.Â

In Horsemanship, the Cowgirls tied the event 2-2 to end the first half of the meet with a 5-4 lead. Harley Huff improved her record to 7-2 on the season with a 76.5-76 victory over Payton Neiberger, and freshman JoJo Roberson handed SMU freshman Lily Anderson her second loss of the season with a 76-74.5 win. Team captain Emma Verplank posted a 76 for the Cowgirls but was tied by SMU's Aubrey Alderman.Â

The second half of the meet started with Fences. SMU took the event 4-0 to take the lead before the final event of the meet. Hannah Janson posted a 70, which resulted in a 70-70 tie with Devin Seek of SMU. Sydney North came within a point of Olivia Woodson but fell 83-84, while Abigail Brayman scored a team-high 85Â but narrowly lost to SMU's Brett Burlington 85-88.

In the final event of the day, SMU built on their lead with a 5-0 sweep in Reining. Kristi Wiggins, Hannah Mitchell, and Gentry Cherry were each within a point of earning a win for OSU but came up short.Â

The Cowgirls will look to bounce back Saturday and get their first win of the spring season when they host TCU at Totusek Arena.
