The Basics
-Â The No. 21 Oklahoma State Cowboys are welcoming San Diego and Northwestern to the Greenwood Tennis Center on Friday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. this week, respectively.
- The Cowboys are 5-2 after travelling to Oxford, Miss. to take on No. 22 Ole Miss and Memphis. The Cowboys split those matches, falling to No. 22 Ole Miss, 2-4, and defeating the Memphis Tigers, 4-0/
- The Cowboys fell one spot in the latest ITA rankings to put themselves at No. 21 in the country after their losses to Columbia and Ole Miss, who are now No. 9 and No. 19 in the nation, respecitvely.
- Oklahoma State started the season with three consecutive wins against San Diego State, Lamar and Bryant.Â
- The Cowboys had a successful fall season starting with a win at the Silverado Invitational in Napa, Calif. in September. Mathieu Scaglia, Emile Hudd, Luke Hammond and Brady Draheim represented OSU in the tournament.Â
- The dynamic duo of No. 2 Matej Vocel and Dominik Kellovsky collected its first tournament win of the fall at the Arkansas Futures event in September. The most impressive win of the fall came when Vocel and Kellovsky defeated John McNally and Robert Cash of Ohio State in the finals of the 2019 ITA National Fall Championships, which earned them their No. 1 spot in the fall ITA rankings. They are now No. 2 in the country.Â
A Look at San Diego
- Oklahoma State has faced off against the San Diego Toreros nine times since 1979 when they first met. San Diego currently holds a 5-4 advantage in the all-time matchup, including wins in the last three matches. Oklahoma State has not defeated San Diego since 2009. Last year, San Diego defeated the Cowboys, 4-3.
- The Toreros are 3-1 this season with wins over Fresno State, San Diego State and Washington. Their only loss of the year came against the UCF Knights, who are currently ranked No. 24 in the country.
- San Diego is not currently ranked, but they do have two individuals in the singles rankings. Gui Osorio is currently ranked No. 39 in the country, just four spots lower than OSU's No. 35 Matej Vocel. August Holmgrem is also ranked in singles at No. 58. San Diego also claims one doubles team in the ITA rankings. Gui Osorio and Nico Borter are ranked No. 31 in the country.
A Look at Northwestern
- This weekend will be the first time in school history that Northwestern and Oklahoma State will meet.Â
- Northwestern is currently 4-2 this season, including a 3-1 home record and a 1-1 road record. Northwestern has wins over Illinois State, Memphis, IUPUI and Louisville. Its two losses came at the hands of NC State and Duke. NC State is currently ranked No. 10 in the country.
- Northwestern is not currently ranked and does not have any individuals in the singles rankings. Northwestern does however have a doubles team ranked in Simen Bratholm and Nick Bookes at No. 38.
Cowboy Quick Hits
- OSU has won at least 15 matches in six consecutive seasons under head coach Jay Udwadia, which includes 16 wins in the 2018-19 season. Four times during that stretch, OSU has hit the 20-win mark, winning 21 in 2014, 20 in 2016, 22 in 2017 and 20 in 2018.
- In the 2020 regular season alone, the Cowboys are set to face off against eight of the top 25 teams in the country: Texas (4), Wake Forest (6), Texas A&M (7), TCU (11), Baylor (12), Michigan (13), California (15) and Tennessee (17).
- The Cowboys logged their sixth-straight NCAA Championship appearance last season but fell in the second round to No. 11 UCLA.
- Head coach Jay Udwadia is second in OSU history in wins with 132. He trails just James Wadley, who has an unprecedented 662 total wins as head coach of the Cowboys. Udwadia also boasts a .653 winning percentage, which is good for fourth-best in OSU history.
- Head coach Jay Udwadia welcomes three new faces to the team this year in Dominik Kellovsky, Oscar Moraing and Etienne Donnet. The latter two were both added to the roster at the beginning of the spring semester.Â
Cowboys in the Rankings
- OSU is slated No. 21 in the lates 2020 ITA Division I men's rankings.Â
Matej Vocel and Dominik Kellovsky were ranked No. 1 in the previous ITA rankings, but after dropping a pair of matches in the spring, they fall to No. 2. The Cowboy duo is currently 2-2 on the season, but one of those losses came to No. 3 Jack Lin and Jackie Tang of Columbia.
-Â Luke Hammond and Emile Hudd come in at No. 19 as they have started the season 3-1 together. Their only loss of the year came to No. 27 Tim Ruehland and Andre Bolla, who jumped up to No. 18 in these latest rankings.Â
- OSU claims one more doubles team in the rankings in Matej Vocel and Emile Hudd, who come in at No. 45 with a 1-0 record after not being ranked together previously.
- The highest ranking in singles came from Matej Vocel, who comes in at No. 35. Vocel was ranked No. 41 to start the spring, but he has started his spring season 3-1 with each match coming on court one. Vocel's most impressive win of the season came by defeating No. 35 Tim Sandaulen of Ole Miss, who is now ranked No. 63 in the nation.
-Â Emile Hudd sits at No. 87 in the country. Hudd has opened the spring season with four consecutive wins, while playing on court three throughout the season.Â
-Â Dominik Kellovsky in the final Cowboy in the rankings as he comes in at No. 110 despite being No. 91 in the previous rankings. Kellovsky is 5-1 this season with his only loss coming to an unranked opponent, but one of his wins coming over No. 99 Makey Rakotomalala of Arizona State.Â
