STILLWATER – The ninth-ranked Cowboy wrestling team (13-2 overall; 8-1 Big 12) heads to Iowa City this weekend for a top-10 contest with the No. 1 Iowa Hawkeyes at 7 p.m. Sunday inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Cowboy/Hawkeye rivalry dates back to 1954, in a dual Oklahoma State won on the road, 24-8. Sunday's dual marks the 54th meeting between the storied programs and the 25th to take place in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have a 13-11 all-time advantage on their home mat, but the Pokes lead the all-time series 29-22-2. John Smith is the winningest coach on either side of the rivalry with an 18-11-1 record against the Hawkeyes. The Cowboys own the longest winning streak in the series with nine consecutive victories from 2000 to 2008. Iowa's longest streak came from 1977 to 1982 with six straight wins. The Cowboys have not won in Carver-Hawkeye since 2012 when they topped the Hawkeyes 17-16.
Iowa and Oklahoma State are two of the premier programs in NCAA wrestling, combining for 57 NCAA team titles throughout history. Here is how things stack up:

Cowboys in the Polls
The Cowboys have ranked wrestlers at each weight with the exception of 285 pounds in various polls. Across the board, senior Nick Piccininni holds the No. 4 spot at 125. Boo Lewallen remains at No. 6 for a second straight week. With three ranked wins to his credit, Wyatt Sheets remains outside the top 20 of Intermat's 157-pounders but is ranked No. 13 in The Open Mat's polls this week. At 165 pounds, Travis Wittlake moved a spot to No. 6 among 165-pounders. Joe Smith (13) and Dakota Geer (16) dropped in the rankings following losses against the Sooners. Anthony Montalvo climbed one spot in the rankings this week coming in at No. 14, and Dusty Hone is ranked in all but one set of rankings coming in as high as No. 15 at 141 pounds.
What to Watch
The Hawkeyes are a heavy favorite in the rivalry matchup on Sunday. All 10 of Iowa's starters fall inside the top 10. Piccininni faces a familiar opponent in top-ranked Spencer Lee. Lee has won all but one of the duo's meetings, including the most recent bout between the two at the 2019 NCAA tournament. No. 6 Boo Lewallen meets second-ranked Pat Lugo for the first time at 149 pounds. The pair is a combined 35-2 on the year with one loss apiece. Sixth-ranked Cowboy Travis Wittlake takes on No. 2 Alex Marinelli. Each of the wrestlers has only one loss this season. Wittlake has not lost a dual matchup for the Pokes and has four ranked wins to his name. Cowboy 184-pounder Anthony Montalvo has a tough opponent in Iowa freshman Abe Assad. The pair has identical records this season at 19-5 with Assad positioned at No. 9 and Montalvo at No. 14.
