Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
Oklahoma State freshman Cade Cunningham kicked into another gear on Tuesday night. The Cowboy star scored a season-high 29 points, including OSU's last 12 points in the game's final 1:31, to seal a victory over a pesky Oral Roberts squad and improve OSU to 5-0 on the year. Now, Oklahoma State will take the 125-mile trip to Wichita, Kansas to battle the Shockers in what has turned into an exciting regional hoops rivalry. Last season, Wichita State bullied OSU in a physical matchup in Stillwater, but the Cowboys will look to return the favor in Wichita, where they have won the last two meetings.
• Nine-Game Win Streak
Dating back to last season, Oklahoma State has won nine straight games and 13 of its last 16. Of teams that have played at least one game in 2020-21, OSU's nine-game streak ranks as the nation's third longest, and is the longest by a Cowboy team since opening the 2006-07 season with an 11-0 mark. The Cowboys have also won eight straight at home, which is the 32nd longest home-court win streak nationally, and the longest for OSU since a nine-game streak that overlapped the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. The Cowboys have won four straight games away from GIA thanks to victories at Texas, against Iowa State in the 2020 Big 12 Championship, at UT Arlington and at Marquette.
• The Nation's Best All-Around Player
Cade Cunningham's size, vision and athleticism make him the ultimate stat stuffer and college basketball's best all-around player. The current Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Cunningham is averaging 20.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per game this year. No other player in college basketball can match those all-around averages. What's more, he's shooting 49.3 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from 3-point and 86.2 percent from the stripe.
• The Series With Wichita State
Just 125 miles separate Stillwater and Wichita, so it's no wonder that the Cowboys and Shockers have faced each other 40 times since 1934. OSU leads the overall series against WSU, 30-10, including a 15-5 edge in Wichita. However, the Shockers have taken the last two meetings in the series, both in Stillwater. OSU has won in its last two trips to Wichita, including a 93-76 victory in 2016 that gave the Shockers their first ever loss in INTRUST Arena.
• Missouri Valley Ties
Oklahoma State, known then as Oklahoma A&M, and Wichita State shared a Missouri Valley Conference rivalry from 1945 (when WSU joined the league) until 1957 (when OSU left for the Big Eight). During that span, A&M emerged as a national power under Mr. Henry Iba - winning NCAA titles in 1945 and 1946 - and had a 19-5 record against the Shockers.
