The Basics
The Oklahoma State football team opens its 118th season when it travels to Corvallis, Oregon, to face Oregon State at 9:30 p.m. CT (7:30 p.m. PT) on Friday, Aug. 30, at Reser Stadium. This marks the first time since 2015 the Cowboys have opened their season on the road, and the 52nd time overall they have opened the season with a road game. OSU's overall record in season openers is 71-41-5. It marks just the third time during Mike Gundy's tenure that the Cowboys have opened with a true road game, although it will mark the sixth time a Gundy-led team will open a season away from Stillwater.

Â
The Series
Friday's game marks the first meeting between Oklahoma State and Oregon State. Although the Cowboys have never faced the Beavers, OSU has squared off several times with schools who are currently in the Pac-12, holding a 33-37-1 record (OSU holds a 20-26-1 record vs. Colorado, who shared a conference with the Cowboys). Over the past decade, the Cowboys are 7-1 against Pac-12 schools. Mike Gundy holds a 9-3 career record against schools in today's Pac-12, including a 38-8 Alamo Bowl win over Colorado in 2016 and a 30-22 win over Washington in the Cactus Bowl in the two most recent matchups. Friday's game will mark the first Big 12 opponent for Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith.
Â
Oklahoma State From a Distance
Oklahoma State is coming off 7-6 season that was capped by a win over No. 23 Missouri in the 2018 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. It marked the end of an up-and-down season that included two wins over opponents ranked in the top 10 of the AP poll (No. 6 Texas and No. 7 West Virginia). It marked just the third time in school history the Cowboys had beaten two top-10 opponents in the same season. The most notable returner is first-team All-America receiver Tylan Wallace, who stormed onto the scene last year and finished as a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award given to the nation's best pass catcher. As a sophomore last season, Wallace ranked second nationally with 1,491 receiving yards, led the nation with 63 receptions of 10 yards or longer and tied for second in the FBS with 25 receptions of 20 yards or longer. His 17.33 yards per reception last year also led the FBS among players with a minimum of 80 catches. Running back Chuba Hubbard should also play a prominent role on offense after taking over the feature back role in the final four games of the season and crossing the 100-yard mark in three of them. At quarterback, graduate transfer Dru Brown and redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders are both expected to see action. Brown was a two-year starter at Hawai'i and Sanders was a highly-touted recruit out of Denton Ryan HS in Texas. Neither has taken a meaningful snap in an Oklahoma State uniform yet, so there is a level of newness regardless of who is under center. Defensively, the Cowboys will feature a whole cast of new starters on the defensive line, but will have a strong group of returning starters in the secondary. For the first time in Mike Gundy's tenure, he will have two cornerbacks in their third year as starters with A.J. Green and Rodarius Williams returning. On special teams, Cowboy kicker Matt Ammendola is back for his senior season and ranks among the most accurate kickers in school history. Tom Hutton has also had a buzz around his name as the 29-year-old true freshman is set to take over the punting duties after beginning his career playing Australian-rules football.
