Cowgirls Set To Renew Rivalry With Texas A&M
June 24, 2019 | Cowgirl Basketball
IRVING, Texas — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team will face a familiar foe on Dec. 7 when it travels to College Station, Texas to battle Texas A&M as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge.
The two squads have squared off 43 times with the Cowgirls holding a 22-21 advantage in the series. From 1997 to the most recent meeting in 2012, 12 contests were decided by five points or less, including the 2008 meeting in the Big 12 Championship title game in Kansas City. Texas A&M went 26-8 a year ago and capped its season with a Sweet 16 appearance.
The matchup will feature two of the nation's top returning scorers in rising juniors Vivian Gray (20.0 ppg) of OSU and A&M's Chennedy Carter (23.3 ppg). Gray and Carter represent two of the top five scoring sophomores in the country from the 2018-19 season with Gray finishing the year ranked 25th overall and Carter checking in at No. 6.
The Cowgirls have participated in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on three occasions, posting a 1-2 mark. OSU defeated Georgia, 71-51, at home in 2016, before falling, 79-76, at No. 6 Mississippi State in 2017. Last year, the Cowgirls lost to 11th-ranked Tennessee, 76-63, in Stillwater.
The contest marks the third against an NCAA participant from a year ago to appear on the Cowgirls' non-conference slate thus far. OSU will face Oregon (Final Four) and Louisville (Elite Eight) in November at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. Additionally, the Cowgirls will take on UT Arlington at the event, which reached the second round of the WNIT last season.
Every team from the Big 12 will participate, while 10 teams from the SEC will take part. The format features five home games on campus sites for each conference per year.
In 2019, games will begin on Wednesday, December 4 and conclude on Sunday, December 8. Exact times and television designations will be released when available.
The inaugural challenge was held in 2014. The 10-team format began in 2016. For the past two seasons, the two conferences split the challenge with a 5-5 mark.
