Cowgirl Seniors Set Individual Records in Regular Season Finale
May 05, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball seniors Madi Sue Montgomery and Samantha Show both set school records on the final day of the regular season Sunday, a day that saw the 12th-ranked Cowgirls fall twice to No. 1 Oklahoma, 7-1 and 6-1.
Montgomery, a four-year starter for OSU (37-14; 13-5 Big 12), tied and later set the program's career record for total number of at-bats, while Show surpassed the school's single-season home run record with her 16th blast of the season.
"It's bittersweet, in a way, with this senior day," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It hurts and I feel for those kids. The bottom line is that we wanted to get these kids out of here with a win against those guys, but that's not the endgame. The endgame for us is to perform well in the postseason. It's hard to kind of not know now if we'll play any more home games here with these kids."
In her final regular season games at Cowgirl Stadium, Montgomery opened a Bedlam doubleheader with a first-pitch single to right field, an at-bat which brought her level with Shanel Scott's school record. Montgomery logged five more at-bats Sunday to claim sole possession of yet another OSU career record.
The senior, along with Taylor Lynch, finishes her career at Cowgirl Stadium with 57 victories - the most home victories for OSU during a four-year stretch since 2013. Montgomery and Lynch are the only two players to be on the Oklahoma State roster during each of Kenny Gajewski's four seasons as head coach, and their 146 wins during that time makes them OSU's third-winningest senior class since 1995.
Show, meanwhile, tried to spark a struggling Cowgirl offense in Sunday's opener by blasting a solo home run off the scoreboard in right field. It was the two-way star's 16th home run of the season, setting a new OSU single-season record.
The long ball marked the 11th time this season Show has hit a home run when the Pokes were either tied or trailing, and on eight occasions she has delivered the game-tying or go-ahead home run.
Outside of Show and Montgomery's record-setting efforts, Oklahoma State struggled offensively throughout all of Sunday's doubleheader. Chyenne Factor provided one of the few hits with a solo home run in the second inning of the series finale.
The Cowgirls mustered only six total hits off Oklahoma's slew of elite arms this weekend, and were swept in a three-game series for the first time since last year's Bedlam set. OSU has not defeated its in-state foe since 2011.
OSU will now have to pick itself up and shift gears toward postseason play, which begins next weekend with the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship in Oklahoma City. The Pokes will face Texas and Iowa State in Friday's round of pool play before competing in a third game on Saturday.
