Cowgirls Use Six-Run Sixth to Defeat No. 8 Texas
May 10, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 14 Oklahoma State softball team scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind win against No. 8 Texas in the Cowgirls' opening game of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship Friday afternoon.
It was the 13th comeback win of the year for OSU (38-14; 13-5 Big 12) and the sixth time the Cowgirls have rallied to defeat a ranked team in 2019.
Rylee Bayless started the decisive sixth inning off with a first-pitch single into left field. Seven of the next eight batters reached base for OSU, with Chyenne Factor, Sydney Springfield, Kiley Naomi and Chelsea Alexander combining to drive in the Pokes' six runs.
Factor was the first run producer, as she drove a long single off the wall down the right-field line with the bases loaded to cut a 2-0 Texas lead in half. Springfield, pinch hitting for Taylor Lynch, followed immediately after with a two-run single to center field, which gave the Cowgirls their first and only lead of the day.
Springfield's talent as a pinch hitter has been prevalent for the Cowgirls in recent weeks, as she previously bagged a two-run triple to left field in OSU's seven-run comeback against Texas Tech two weeks ago.
The offensive outpour continued with Kiley Naomi bringing around one more run on a double down the left-field line, and then Chelsea Alexander capped the explosive inning with a two-run single to left field.
Seven different Cowgirls recorded hits off Texas starter Miranda Elish Friday, and five different players drew walks.
In the circle, Samantha Show was her normal electric self, as she tossed her 16th complete game of the year to improve to 17-7 on the season. Show allowed only four hits - two of which came in the game's opening frame - and struck out three in her dominant outing.
The senior has thrown 68 of 95 possible innings against top-15 opponents for Oklahoma State this season, and has helped the Cowgirls go 8-6 in those matchups. On three occasions she has shutout a ranked foe, previously keeping No. 13 Arizona State, No. 24 Oregon and the then-No. 9 Longhorns off the board during the regular season.
The Cowgirls will compete in the second half of pool play later this evening when they face Iowa State at 5 p.m. CT. With a win, OSU would secure its spot in Saturday's Big 12 Championship Game, where they will face the winner of the opposite pool.
