Cowgirls Clinch Big 12 Championship Game Berth
May 10, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
OSU (39-14; 13-5 Big 12) swept its two contests Friday, besting Iowa State after using a six-run sixth inning to defeat No. 8 Texas, 6-2, earlier in the day. Saturday will mark the Cowgirls' second appearance in the championship game since the tournament was reinstated in 2017.
"Obviously this is not the outcome I thought we'd see. We're obviously happy, but never in my wildest dreams did I think we'd hit seven home runs and score 17 runs against a pretty good team," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I'm really thrilled with the way we bounced back from last weekend, when we were just steamrolled. We challenged our kids all week and they answered. They committed to making those little adjustments."
Iowa State jumped on the Cowgirls with a leadoff home run to open the bottom of the first inning, but OSU quickly pounced back by blasting five home runs in the top of the second inning.
The five home runs tied the program's single-game record and shattered the single-inning mark. It was the third time in school history the Cowgirls hit five home runs in a single contest, with the Pokes previously doing so on Feb. 20, 2011, against Nicholls and on April 13, 2016, vs. Central Arkansas.
Raquel Dominguez jump-started the otherworldly inning for the OSU offense with a moon shot that cleared the fence easily in left field. It was Dominguez's first career home run, and was only the start of a wild inning for her, and her teammates.
Samantha Show followed Dominguez's solo effort three batters later with a three-run homer of her own that was somehow torched even further than the latter's blast. It was Show's 17th home run of the season, which is the highest single-season total in Oklahoma State's illustrious history.
More history was set just two batters later, as Michaela Richbourg sent a solo shot over the center-field fence to bring her tally to 13 home runs this season. Richbourg's 13 home runs are the most ever by a sophomore at OSU, and her and Show's 30 combined home runs are the highest single-season total by two teammates in program history.
The fourth Cowgirl blast of the inning again came two batters later, when freshman Kiley Naomi jacked a two-run shot to center field. Naomi has now hit six home runs during her first collegiate season, three shy of the OSU freshman record held by Julie Ward and Madi Sue Montgomery.
Oklahoma State's second inning still wasn't done just yet though, as Sydney Pennington hit a bloop single to help the Cowgirls turn the lineup back over to Dominguez. The Victorville, California, native used her second at-bat of the inning well, putting yet another beautiful swing on a ball over the heart of the plate and racking up her second home run of the inning, and the second of her career.
Dominguez's multi-home run inning is the only recorded instance of a Cowgirl batter hitting two or more home runs in a single frame since at least 2000.
The record-breaking inning wasn't all the Pokes had planned for Friday's nightcap, as Rylee Bayless torpedoed a two-run home run to center field in the top of the fourth inning to help OSU break its single-game home run record. Sydney Springfield then added a seventh Cowgirl home run in that same frame to further solidify the record.
Oklahoma State's rally after ISU's first-inning home run marked the Cowgirls second come-from-behind win Friday, and pushed their total to 14 comeback wins this season. Six of those, including the victory over No. 8 Texas, have come against ranked competition.
The victory over Iowa State marked the Cowgirls' highest single-game run total in a postseason game in school history, surpassing the 14 runs the Pokes scored against Northwestern Oklahoma State on April 18, 1978. The 15-run margin of victory was also the largest postseason win in team history.
Also of note, with her two starts on Friday, Madi Sue Montgomery supplanted Vanessa Shippy as the program's career leader in most games played, most games started and most consecutive games started. She has appeared in 235 consecutive contests for OSU, never missing a start in her collegiate career.
The Cowgirls will now shift gears toward tomorrow's Big 12 Championship Game, where they will face the winner of Pool A. First pitch for tomorrow's Big 12 Championship Game is set for 4 p.m. CT on Fox Sports 2.
