Cowgirl Softball's History in Tallahassee
May 22, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Oklahoma State softball team is set to compete in Super Regionals for the first time since 2011 this week, as they hit the road for a best-of-three series against the defending national champions and No. 4 overall seed, Florida State. The winner of the Tallahassee Super Regional will punch their ticket as one of the eight teams to compete in the Women's College World Series next week.
Oklahoma State and Florida State are two of college softball's historic programs, and they have crossed paths several times over the years.
The Pokes hold an 11-6 advantage in the all-time series, but the two schools have met just once since 2009 - a 4-1 victory for the then-No. 8 Seminoles at the 2015 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic out on the west coast. OSU is 2-0 against FSU in Tallahassee, with both victories coming during the 2009 NCAA Tallahassee Regional.Â
The two triumphs were a pair of 1-0 shutouts, capped by a 12-inning victory that eliminated the hosting Seminoles.
OSU softball has a long tradition in the postseason, dating back to the late 1970's and early '80's when the Cowgirls were annually among the nation's final teams competing for a national championship in what was then the AIAWÂ World Series.
Fast forward three-plus decades and the Cowgirls are building their way back to being one of college softball's elite programs. The Pokes are currently in the midst of their 22nd postseason appearance this year, and it's the fourth-straight season that head coach Kenny Gajewski has guided the program to the NCAA Tournament.Â
He is the only coach in program history to lead the Pokes to the NCAA Tournament in each of his or her first four seasons.
Oklahoma State's seven appearances in the Women's College World Series is tied for the 13th most in NCAA history. The Cowgirls last appeared in Oklahoma City in 2011, but were bounced quickly from the event. The 2019 Cowgirls have achieved a number of feats for the first time since that 2011 season, so perhaps that will serve as a good omen for the team entering Super Regional play this weekend.
