Defending Our Turf: Cowgirls Dominant at Home In 2019
May 14, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State softball coach Kenny Gajewski and his teams have worked tirelessly over the past four seasons to rebuild the environment at Cowgirl Stadium and make it as difficult and imposing for visiting teams as it can possibly be. In 2019, the fourth-year boss is seeing the results.
This year, the Oklahoma State fanbase – known nationwide for being the rowdiest fans in all the land – has flocked to the corner of Duck and McElroy to catch a glimpse of the act that has quickly become the hottest ticket in town.
The buzz around Stillwater and inside the confines of Cowgirl Stadium has helped lift the program even further, propelling the Pokes to a 15-3 record on their home turf in 2019.
Oklahoma State's 15 home victories is tied for the program's fifth-highest single-season total in school history. The team's .833 winning percentage is also its top mark since winning 19 of 22 games (.864) in Stillwater back in 2010.
In its final home contest of the regular season - a Bedlam matchup against No. 1 Oklahoma on May 5 - OSU shattered the Cowgirl Stadium attendance record, as 1,374 of the nation's rowdiest fans packed the stands and tailgaters standing in truck beds lined the outfield wall.
The Cowgirls also hosted the two highest attended three-game weekends at Cowgirl Stadium on record in 2019, as 2,365 fans flooded the ballpark to see the Pokes take two of three from top-10 Texas back in March, followed by another 2,242 during OSU's three-game sweep of then-No. 13 Texas Tech in late April.
'The Rowdy' has commonly been associated with the roof-shaking noise that comes out of Gallagher-Iba Arena on basketball gamedays, and that same building has also been referred to as Ed Gallagher's 'House of Horrors' thanks to the wrestling program's dominance on the mat.
Both of those terms are beginning to be applicable over at the softball field, as Gajewski's own 'House of Horrors' is being built, and it's 'The Rowdy' who are helping bring the noise that engulfs opponents and lifts the Cowgirls to their full potential.
OSU has been immensely successful on its home turf this year. If the Pokes can continue to do so this weekend, they'll have a fantastic chance to advance to the program's first super regional since 2011.
