Vocel Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State sophomore Matej Vocel has been named the unanimous Big 12 Newcomer of the Year it was announced on Wednesday.
Vocel recorded an 11-8 dual singles record, including seven ranked victories. Most notably, Vocel upset No. 3 Alex Rybakov of TCU, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, in the Cowboys' quarterfinal upset of the No. 7 Horned Frogs at the Big 12 Championship.
The Czech Republic native also recorded wins against No. 8 Christian Sigsgaard (Texas) and No. 94 Parker Wynn (Texas Tech).
Vocel is the seventh Cowboy in school history to be named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, last of which was current Cowboy senior, Artur Dubinski in 2017.
OSU also collected All-Big 12 honors in singles and doubles. Vocel was named to the All-Big 12 Singles first team, while the doubles tandem of Vocel and freshman Emile Hudd was named to the All-Big 12 second team.
The No. 23 Cowboys (15-11, 1-4 Big 12) are preparing for a rematch with No. 31 Ole Miss (16-12, 5-7 SEC) in the first round of the NCAA Championship. Ole Miss took the regular season matchup, 4-3, in Stillwater.
Vocel will also compete in the NCAA Individual Singles Championship from May 20-25 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida after the team championships conclude.
