Cowgirls Sweep Sooners on Senior Day

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State women's tennis team shut out No. 31 Oklahoma on senior day Sunday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center, 7-0.

"This is always a proud moment because it's a lot of hard work and a lot of energy, effort and time all coming together for this," coach Chris Young said. "For them to have the type of day they did and give that type of effort, I think it's special."Â

In front of nearly 300 Cowgirl fans, senior Sofia Blanco clinched the match in a, 6-2, 6-2, defeat of Oklahoma's Kianah Motosono. Shortly after, Marina Guinart sealed the sweep in a bout with Martina Capurro that went to three sets, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. Blanco's win marked her 15th this spring, and Guinart moved to 13-3 in singles play this season.Â

Guinart and partner Katarina Stresnakova dropped the only match of the day but compensated with solid singles play. No 38 Stresnakova knocked off 23rd -ranked Sooner Oleksandra Korashvili, 7-6(2), 6-1. It marked the Cowgirl's fifth win over a ranked opponent this spring and pushed her to 11-8 on the year in the No. 1 position.Â

"I'm so excited," Stresnakova said. "As I said, it really doesn't get better than beating OU, 7-0, on senior day. I'm very happy and proud of the girls for competing so hard, and I'm very excited."

Three underclassmen picked up dominant wins against the Sooners on Sunday as well. Catherine Gulihur stormed through two sets against OU's Ivana Corley to score the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-2 win. No. 119 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat also controlled her match against Jasmine Asghar, taking the bout, 6-3, 6-1.Â

Lisa Marie Rioux stepped in with Tamara Arnold for doubles and notched a win over OU's Kianah Motosono and Korashvili, 6-2, before taking the court for singles where she defeated Martina Capurro, 6-3, 6-3.Â

The No. 12 Cowgirls are back on the courts at 5 p.m., Friday, April 12 in Fort Worth against the Horned Frogs of TCU. The team then travels to Texas Tech for a Sunday bout against the Red Raiders to close out the regular season.Â
