Show Walks-Off No. 13 Texas Tech to Clinch Sweep
April 28, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The No. 12 Oklahoma State softball team posted its third-straight come-from-behind win of the weekend Sunday, as Samantha Show hit a three-run walk-off home run to left field to clinch the Cowgirls' series sweep of No. 13 Texas Tech.
It was the 12th comeback win for OSU (37-11; 13-2 Big 12) this season, and five of those have come against ranked opponents, including all three victories over the Red Raiders this weekend.
"A great weekend and it was capped off by a great game here today, and, just, wow," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "This team just continues to amaze me. They never quit and never think they're out of anything. We weren't very good the first four innings, but I thought (Erin) Edmoundson was really good. Chelsea (Alexander) had that big hit off the wall, but that kind of changed the momentum for us. I thought we would at least tie it up. I had no idea we would end the game like that, but I knew we were going to score."
The walk-off blast from Samantha Show was the senior's 15th home run of the season, tying her with Madi Sue Montgomery for the school's single-season record. It was the 10th time this season Show has hit a home run when her team was either tied or trailing, and the eighth time her home run either tied the game or gave the Cowgirls the lead.
"In all my at-bats today, I took strikes that were plated. As an elite hitter, I can't take those," Show said. "In that last at-bat, I told myself that if there was anything on the plate, I'm going full throttle. The ball was there and I hit it out. We trailed in every game of the series, but I didn't have any doubts."
Show's game-winning home run came just a half inning after Texas Tech had scored two runs via sacrifice flies to break a 3-3 deadlock. It was the second time the Cowgirls rallied on Sunday, as the Pokes dug themselves out of a 3-0 hole to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Chelsea Alexander was the one who started the fifth-inning rally when she ripped a single down the right-field line. She would later score in the inning, and then Madi Sue Montgomery capped the three-run frame with a two-run double down the right-field line.
It was the 49th double of Montgomery's illustrious career, and brought her career RBI tally. She is now one double shy of becoming just the sixth player in Big 12 history to record at least 50 doubles and 30 home runs, and is also on the verge of being the league's sixth player to join the 200-RBI club.
Sunday's thrilling victory further cemented the Cowgirls' place among the top two teams in the Big 12 conference this season. Now, for the third-straight year, OSU will enter the final week of the regular season with a chance to claim the program's first conference championship since 1995.
In order to achieve that feat, the Pokes will have to sweep their Bedlam rival, Oklahoma, in a three-game series.
That's certainly a tall task for any team in the country, but with the Cowgirls flying high on the heels of nine-straight conference victories, anything is possible. Bedlam is set to begin Friday night at Cowgirl Stadium, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT.
