Cowgirls Edged by No. 1 Oklahoma in Bedlam Opener
May 04, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 12 Oklahoma State softball team had its 11-game winning streak snapped in the opener of a three-game Bedlam series Saturday, as the Cowgirls fell to top-ranked Oklahoma, 3-0, at Marita Hynes Field.
For OSU (37-12; 13-3 Big 12), the loss dashed the Cowgirls' hopes of winning the program's first conference title since 1995. The Pokes still have two games left in the series to rebuild momentum ahead of next week's Big 12 tournament though.
"Our at-bats were just not very good, not very competitive early," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Then, all of a sudden, we started to put a couple balls in play, but we just can't waste away three innings. When you're facing really good teams, and you're not sharp, they punish you. (Oklahoma) had a couple nice hits, and we made some nice plays defensively. It's encouraging with the way we're playing there, and the way Kiley (Naomi) is playing at short."
After the two teams traded scoreless innings through the first three, the Sooners broke the deadlock with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the fourth. OU added one more runs over the next three innings to clinch the 2019 Big 12 regular season title.
Samantha Show handled much of the series opener for OSU in the circle, as she pitched 5 1/3-plus innings, allowed three earned runs and struck out one Sooner batter. Her record drops to 16-6 this season after taking the loss Saturday.
Offensively, Oklahoma State couldn't muster much of anything, placing only four runners on base against OU starter Giselle 'G' Juarez in the first five innings. The Cowgirls rallied though, loading the bases with a pair of walks and infield single in the top of the sixth, but were unable to bring anyone around to get on the board.
"We get two more shots at them tomorrow at home," Gajewski said. "I think our crowd will be crazy. When you're facing a team like this, you just can't make any mistakes at all and we had too many of those here tonight. We have to figure out a way just to fight just a little bit more."
The Cowgirls and Sooners will wrap up Bedlam with a pair of games tomorrow in Stillwater. The doubleheader will start with an 11:30 a.m. contest, followed by a 3 p.m. game, which will air on FSN.
