Cowboy Wrestling in First Place after Session One of Big 12 Championship

STILLWATER – The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the first session of the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship in first place with 65.5 team points, leading second-place Iowa State by 17 points.
The Cowboys went 15-2 in individual bouts during the opening session, totaling nine bonus-point wins with three falls, three technical falls and three major decisions.
OSU started the day going 7-0 in the preliminary round with six bonus-point wins, including falls from Daton Fix at 133 pounds and Joe Smith at 165 pounds, both over unseeded opponents.
Rolling straight into the next round, the Cowboys followed that up by winning eight of 10 in the quarterfinals, as their eight semifinalists mark the most for any team.
Quarterfinal highlights included a 17-2 technical fall from Nick Piccininni over Utah Valley's Mitch Brown at 125 pounds, a first-period fall from Jacobe Smith over eighth-seeded Dominic Kincaid of Fresno State at 174 pounds and 12-3 major decision from Derek White over No. 8 Kayne Hutchison of Air Force at heavyweight.
In addition to those three, Fix, Kaid Brock, Kaden Gfeller, Dakota Geer and Preston Weigel also advanced through to the semifinals of the event.
The Cowboys continue their pursuit of a seventh-consecutive Big 12 championship when session two begins at 5 p.m. at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
