EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 19 Oklahoma State softball team opened its weekend in the Pacific Northwest in style, as the Cowgirls shutout No. 24 Oregon, 3-0, on a brisk Friday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
OSU (16-5; 0-0 Big 12) is off to its best start since 2011, when the Cowgirls posted the same 21-game record.
"It was a good win to start the weekend," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought (Samantha) Show was good enough. She struggled at times with command, but, for the most part, pitched well. We got the big hit from (Chyenne Factor) in the sixth and got that run in the first that really helped us. I'm just happy that we got this first win and we've got a big day out here tomorrow."
Offensively, Chyenne Factor had another huge day at the plate, going 2-for-3 and driving in all three Cowgirl runs Friday night.
Factor opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-out single that scored Rylee Bayless, who led off the game with a second-pitch double to the wall in left field. The freshman from Yukon, Oklahoma, came back again in the top of the sixth inning, unloading on a two-run home run to right-center field that capped the Cowgirls' three-run output.
Over her last six games, Factor is 10-for-14 at the plate. She has driven in eight runs, scored seven times, notched six extra-base hits (3 2B, 3 HR) and walked three times during that time.
Factor has driven in seven of Oklahoma State's last eight runs offensively over the past three games. The only run she didn't drive home was a Rylee Bayless solo home run against Wichita State on Wednesday.
In the circle, Samantha Show powered the Pokes to victory by allowing just one hit and striking out four in her third complete-game shutout of the year. It was also the sixth time this season that Show has allowed one earned run or less in a complete-game performance.
Much of the credit for the zero on the board goes to the Cowgirls' efforts in the field, which includes Show's ability to field her position. The best example of that came in the home half of the fifth inning, when she helped start a 1-6-3 double play to keep the Ducks off the board.
Friday night's defensive effort gives the Cowgirls two shutout wins over top-25 foes this season, and three ranked wins overall. It is the first time OSU has blanked multiple ranked opponents in the same season since 2012, when the Cowgirls did so three times.
OSU will continue play in Eugene tomorrow with a doubleheader against the Ducks beginning at 2 p.m. CT. Saturday's matchups will bring OSU's total to 13 games played against teams either ranked or receiving votes so far this year.
