EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 19 Oklahoma State softball team extended its winning run to eight and completed a three-game sweep of No. 24 Oregon Saturday with two victories over the Ducks at Jane Sanders Stadium. The Cowgirls won the first game 7-6 and the second 9-6 immediately after.
OSU (18-5; 0-0 Big 12) is off to its best start since 2011, when the Cowgirls posted the same record through 23 games. Saturday's doubleheader sweep also brings the program to 1,500 all-time wins, which is the second most of any current program in the Big 12 conference.
"I think, no matter what, the bottom line is winning and it's good to get these wins," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It was a long day and a grind. We obviously didn't pitch as well as we have all year, but it was good to see our offense kind of pick the slack up here. The bottom line is to win, and that's what this team did."
Oklahoma State continued to build on its early-season form quickly Saturday, scoring two runs over the first three innings of the doubleheader. Oregon struck back in the home half of the fourth inning though, tacking on three runs to take its first lead of the weekend, 3-2.
Senior Samantha Show didn't let Oregon hold momentum for long, as she hit a towering solo home run off the left-field netting to open the top of the fifth. OSU scored once more in the fifth and then Sydney Pennington and Sydney Springfield brought home three more runs with back-to-back jacks in the top of the seventh.
Springfield's insurance run proved to be mightily valuable, as the Duck scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the Cowgirl lead to one. Show again proved to be the momentum-stopper for UO, as she slammed the door and earned her second save of the season in the 7-6 victory.
In the nightcap, the Cowgirls got on the board quickly as Taylor Lynch scored Rylee Bayless with an RBI single through the right side. Lynch finished 3-for-3 in Saturday's finale, improving her batting average to .333 in 57 at-bats so far this season.
Oregon again came storming back though, tacking on two runs in the home half of the first to put the Cowgirls in their second deficit of the day.
Freshman Chyenne Factor, the Cowgirls' hottest bat over the past week, filled into Show's stopper role in the top of the third, as she tied the game with an RBI double off the top of the center-field wall. Lynch added two more runs on a single to left, and the Cowgirl offense ultimately compiled six runs in the inning to take a 7-2 lead.
OSU's top-25 foe continued to scratch and claw with the Cowgirls at every stage, scoring three runs off Logan Simunek and pulling within one of the Pokes.
Again though, the powerful bats of Pennington and Show played the pivotal role, as Pennington skied a solo home run in the top of the sixth and Show followed with a two-out RBI double in the same frame to make it a 9-6 advantage for the orange and black. It was Pennington's 12th career home run and fifth of the season, bringing her within two of matching her total from her freshman campaign a year ago.
Show finished off the third defeat of the Ducks with a three-inning relief effort Saturday evening. She issued back-to-back walks to start the frame, but struck out the next three batters to improve to 7-2 for the year.
Next up for Oklahoma State is a midweek matchup against Central Arkansas, which will be the Cowgirls' lone home contest before embarking on an eight-game road trip. First pitch at Cowgirl Stadium is set for 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Cowgirl Stadium.
