Cowgirl Bats Erupt in 21-Run Outburst
March 22, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
OSU (22-8, 1-0 Big 12) has recorded 11 victories over teams either ranked or receiving votes in at least one of the national polls this year, including two wins over top-15 foes.
"We don't expect to have games like this. These things - we just kind of got on a roll and took some great at-bats all night long," Gajewski said. "I'm just excited for our kids. We've been working really hard and we've been struggling with the bats, but came out here and it was fun to watch Richbourg and Pennington put on a show. And there were others - Kiley Naomi had some great at-bats, and there's just a bunch of us and too many to go through."
The Cowgirls used three explosive innings to put the game out of reach early, as they scored six runs in the third inning, followed it with eight in the fourth and added seven more in the top of the fifth. OSU has scored five or more runs in an inning 14 times so far this season.
Michaela Richbourg got the scoring started with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the third, but that was only the beginning of the fireworks for her and her team.
Madi Sue Montgomery was next up in the RBI feast, as she drove home two runs with a two-out single down the left field line. Sydney Pennington followed Montgomery two batters later with a three-run home run to center field, capping the six-run third inning.
Pennington's blast was her career-high eighth of the season, and the 15th of her Cowgirl career.
In the top of the fourth, OSU scraped across a pair of runs with two bases-loaded walks from Chyenne Factor and Sydney Pennington before the floodgates opened again.
Taylor Lynch was the one who busted it open, as she sat on a floating changeup and flipped a two-run double to left center. It was Lynch's sixth double of the year, all of which have come while she has been playing on a torn ACL.
Richbourg was the batter who followed the Cowgirl senior, and the sophomore from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, wasted no time in re-claiming the home run chain she possessed just an inning prior, as she scorched a three-run home run of her own to almost the exact spot that Pennington's had landed previously.
Friday's outburst at the plate was Richbourg's first multi-home run game and her four runs batted in were a career high.
She was outdone in the RBI category only by her fellow sophomore, Sydney Pennington, who went 2-for-3 with the aforementioned home run, a double and a career-high five runs batted in.
The Pokes sealed their 21-run outburst with seven scores in the top of the fifth.
Gabby Sprang polished off the Lady Bears in the home half of the fifth, pitching just the one inning in relief of starter Samantha Show. Show went four innings and struck out a pair of Lady Bears en route to earning her team-high ninth win of the season.
Friday's win marked the second-straight year that OSU has run-ruled the Lady Bears in the teams' first matchup of the year. Last season, OSU bested Baylor, 14-6, in five innings at Cowgirl Stadium to start a three-game sweep in Stillwater.
"Good way to start off our conference play," Gajewski said. "We're gonna have to get back out here tomorrow like this never happened though, and be ready because it's going to be a fight and a grind."
The Pokes will look to build on their newfound momentum with a second matchup against the Lady Bears tomorrow in Waco. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Southwest.
