PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team finished the first session of the 2019 NCAA Championships in third place Thursday, sending seven of its nine wrestlers through to the second round of the championship brackets.
The Cowboys finished the session with an 8-2 record, getting bonus-point wins from Nick Piccininni (125), Daton Fix (133), Kaid Brock (141), Preston Weigel (197) and Derek White (HWT). Jacobe Smith (174) and Dakota Geer (184) also picked up wins by decision to move on to the second round.
"I think overall it was a good round," coach John Smith said. "It wasn't perfect. I thought we wrestled a little bit conservatively in a couple of matches. We scored the points we needed and advanced seven, and that's a good number as we go into tonight."
Some of the highlights from the opening session included a first-period fall from Piccininni over Campbell's Korbin Meink, a 16-0 technical fall from Weigel over Northern Colorado's Jacob Seely and an upset, 6-0 win from No. 26 Geer over seventh-seeded Nick Reenan of N.C. State.
OSU's other bonus-point wins came via a 21-7 major decision from Fix over Zack Trampe (Binghamton), a 12-3 major decision from Brock over No. 18 Bryan Lantry (Buffalo) and a 10-2 major decision from White over No. 33 Brandon Ngati (West Virginia).
Jacobe Smith's win came in sudden victory, as he picked up a takedown to get past No. 26 Drew Hughes of Michigan State, 6-4.
Joe Smith also picked up a win as the only Cowboy wrestling in the preliminary round, but fell short in his upset bid of undefeated and top-seeded Alex Marinelli of Iowa, 7-4, in the championship first round.
"It was a nice win for Dakota Geer beating the seventh-ranked guy pretty soundly," Smith said. "I thought Joe wrestled pretty well and gave a good effort, but just kind of struggled a little bit on bottom."
Kaden Gfeller also wrestled for the Cowboys at 149 pounds, but fell in sudden victory to No. 26 Ryan Blees of Virginia Tech. He and Joe Smith will now compete in the first round of the consolation brackets.
All nine OSU wrestles will compete tonight in session II of the NCAA Wrestling Championships at 6 p.m. central time, with the session televised live on ESPN and every match on every mat available on watchespn.com.
