MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 18 Oklahoma State softball team snapped its two-game skid with a gritty 5-2 road win over Memphis Monday night in the Volunteer State.
OSU (21-7; 0-0 Big 12) has now won six of it eight true road games this season, with its only two losses coming to Ole Miss over the weekend.
"Yeah, I think what you see is an exhausted team, and like I told them - it's no excuse," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We're a bunch of 18- to 21-year-old kids and tired is not in our vocabulary at all. Scrappy was the way we played. We did some things, scored some runs without hits and short-gamed some stuff. I thought Sam (Show) pitched very well with her nine K's and I felt like that was one of the better games that she has thrown here."
The Cowgirls got an impressive performance from senior Samantha Show in the circle Monday, as the right-handed hurler recorded a season-high nine strikeouts and allowed only four hits in her eighth complete game of the season.
Behind her, the OSU offense scraped across five runs, with a different Cowgirl scoring each run against the Tigers.
Most of the offense came out of a wacky second inning, where the Cowgirls saw 61 pitches, walked five times, stole five bases, advanced on three wild pitches or passed balls and scored three runs. OSU did not record a hit in its three-run frame.
Oklahoma State stole six bases in total Monday - it's highest mark during a single game this season. Five different Cowgirls swiped a bag against Memphis, with Kiley Naomi being the only one to record multiple stolen bases.
Naomi's nine stolen bases leads all Cowgirls in 2019.
The final two OSU runs came in the top of the fourth inning, as Show scored Naomi on a sacrifice bunt, and then Madi Sue Montgomery drove home Rylee Bayless right after with a double to deep right field. It was Montgomery's 10th double of the season and the 45th of her illustrious career.
The Pokes continued to get runners on base in the final three frames, but were unable to bring anyone around as the defense continued to protect a three-run advantage.
Together, Show and her teammates retired the last eight batters that came to the plate to clinch the Cowgirls' 21st win of the year.
The Cowgirls will now enter the second half of a 10-game road swing Wednesday night when they visit their in-state rival, Tulsa. First pitch at the Collins Family Softball Complex is set for 5 p.m. CT.
